LEWISTON, Idaho – The Corban University baseball team, which is receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll for the first time since 2002, took No. 5-ranked Lewis-Clark State College to the brink on Saturday night, but eventually fell to the three-time defending national champions, 6-5.
"Tough game today," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "I'm looking forward to coming out tomorrow and competing with the boys once again."
The Warriors were unfortunate to give up four runs in the third frame, as a two-out error ended up costing Corban all four of the unearned runs.
Maxwell Jeffrey laced a two-RBI single to center in the fourth to cut the deficit in half, and then Ben Ross recorded an RBI groundout in the fifth to make it a one-run ballgame.
LCSC added two runs in the fifth, however, extending the lead back to three runs, but Corban would fight back once more.
In the eighth frame, Tanner Marsh ripped an RBI single to left field, and then Ethan Bragg followed that up with an RBI infield single to score Jarett Thoren and make it a one-run game headed to the ninth.
Corban was unable to get anything going in the ninth though, resulting in the one-run defeat.
Lewis-Clark State (21-5, 11-1 NAIA West) was led by Darren Trainor with a 3-for-4 effort and two RBI, while Makana Victorine went 3-for-3 in the win.
For Corban, Bragg went 4-for-5 at the dish with one RBI and one run scored, while the Warriors recorded 10 total hits as a team to just nine for LCSC. In the loss on the mound, Kris Jackson went seven solid innings, allowing six runs – only two of which were earned. Austin Holmes provided one scoreless inning of relief for the Navy and Gold.
Corban (19-13, 9-4 NAIA West) returns to action tomorrow against LCSC for a 12 p.m. doubleheader. Live Stats, Live Video, and Live Audio will all be available for Sunday's doubleheader.
