LEWISTON, Idaho – The Corban University baseball team came close in game one against No. 5 Lewis-Clark State College on Sunday, but fell short by a run, and then lost game two, resulting in the squad's first NAIA West Conference series defeat of the 2018 campaign. After a narrow 6-5 loss in the opener, the Warriors dropped the nightcap to LCSC, 6-1.
"It was not the day we were hoping for," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "We will be back at it tomorrow."
LCSC took a 5-0 lead in Sunday's opener, but Corban rallied in the sixth with a three-run home run from Ben Ross to cut into the deficit. The Navy and Gold scored one more in the seventh to make it a one-run ballgame, but No. 5-ranked LCSC added an insurance run prior to the ninth, bringing it back to a two-run lead.
Jarett Thoren smashed an RBI double off the wall in the top of the ninth, and eventually his pinch-runner David Yoppini was over at third base with one out. Corban, unfortunately, was unable to bring him in though, leaving him stranded at third base to end the game in the one-run defeat.
Thoren finished the game 3-for-3 at the dish with two RBI and two doubles, while Andrew Axmaker went 2-for-4 with one run scored. In the loss, Rilyn Lewchuk went all eight innings on the mound for the Warriors, dispersing 10 hits while giving up six runs – only five of which were earned.
Sunday's game two saw LCSC score three in the third and three in the fifth, and Corban was only able to muster one run in the sixth en route to the five-run defeat.
Daniel Freiburger went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the loss, while Andrew Axmaker went 1-for-4 with Corban's lone RBI.
Corban (19-15, 9-6 NAIA West) returns to the diamond tomorrow at 11 a.m. to close out the four-game series in Lewiston.
