Corban Women’s Soccer Edges Ottawa in 2018 Season-Opener, 3-2

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Corban University women's soccer team downed Ottawa University (Ariz.) on Saturday afternoon up north in Olympia, edging the Spirit in a tightly-contested battle, 3-2. The result was Corban's first season-opening win since 2014.

"We are very happy with our first win of the season," said Corban head coach Likius Hafeni. "We started very slow, but as the game went on, we improved and got better! Looking forward to our next game and what we can do for the rest of the season!"

Emma Kosmala opened up her senior campaign with a bang, scoring in the 16th minute to give the Warriors the 1-0 lead.

Just a couple of minutes later, Riley Smetzler blasted a free kick from 30 yards out over the wall just over the diving fingertips of the leaping Ottawa goalkeeper and under the crossbar, finding the back of the net for her first-career goal with the Navy and Gold. Ottawa pulled one back late in the first half, however, to make it a one-goal game headed into the break.

In the second stanza, Hannah Shore opener her account with the Corban women's soccer team, finding the goal via a header from six yards out off of a double assist from Nadine Correa and Emma Kosmala. The goal restored Corban's two-goal advantage in the 65th minute of play.

Ottawa once again battled and pulled a goal back late in regulation, but that was all they would get as Corban held on for the 3-2 triumph.

Corban tallied 12 shots to Ottawa's 11, while Shore and Correa led the way offensively for the Warriors with three shots apiece.

Between the pipes, Elizabeth Brock recorded five key saves in her first-career win for the Warriors.

Corban (1-0) returns to action on Tuesday for an exhibition match down south against NCAA D2 foe, Humboldt State University.
