MacDonald’s Golden Goal Lifts Corban Women’s Soccer to Double OT Win over Cats

SALEM, Ore. – It didn't seem likely at many points throughout Saturday night's match, but the Corban University women's soccer team prevailed over Linfield College thanks to a double-overtime golden goal from Rylee MacDonald, winning 1-0.

"I thought both teams played very well, and it was an even game," said Corban head coach Likius Hafeni. "Anybody could have won the game, but we managed to get a last-minute goal, and tactically it worked out the way we wanted! We did not really have much going forward in the first half, and we tried to change that in the second half. We wanted to get good momentum going into our first conference games and this win will help us do that."

Linfield had much of the play in the first half, out-shooting Corban, 9-1. In the second half, the Wildcats continued to force the issue, but the Warrior backline stood tall, and Elizabeth Brock played fantastic in goal, keeping Linfield at bay.

The match remained scoreless through regulation, and through the first overtime, so the game went to a second golden goal overtime stanza.

In the second overtime period, a pass was sent into the middle, and after it snuck past a couple of Linfield defenders, MacDonald pounced and slotted it past the onrushing Wildcat goalkeeper, winning the match via the golden goal. For MacDonald, it marked her second goal on the year and first golden goal with the Navy and Gold.

Between the pipes, Brock was outstanding for Corban, racking up 10 saves en route to the shutout victory, handing Linfield (3-1) its first loss of the campaign.

Corban (3-2) begins Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) action this next week when it hosts The Evergreen State College on Friday afternoon and Northwest University on Saturday night.
