Big Innings, Defensive Miscues Haunt Corban Baseball on Day Two against No. 13 WJU

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Day two of Corban University baseball's four-game set with No. 13-ranked William Jessup University bore many resemblances to day one, with the Jessup offense erasing an early Corban lead in game one by rattling off an explosive inning, and then the Jessup pitching staff delivering a strong effort from the bump to limit the Warrior offense in the latter contest.

"I believe in playing good teams to reveal what we need to work on," said head coach Derek Legg, "We definitely figured out some areas of improvement. We will be back at it next week."

Over the course of the weekend, the Warriors saw firsthand just how dangerous the William Jessup offense could be. With a lineup that returned most of its weapons from the 2018 squad that finished in the top-15 in the NAIA in batting average (.331), slugging (.544), runs per game (8.17), and first in the nation in home runs per game (1.62), the Jessup starting nine didn't appear to have missed a beat entering the 2019 campaign.

As with the series opener yesterday, Corban at one point led in the beginning stages of game one today, scoring a pair of runs via a Justin Tow two-run double to take a 2-1 advantage in the second inning. Unable to find a shutdown inning in the defensive half, William Jessup responded by rattling off seven runs in the bottom of the frame, turning the tide of the contest. The potent Jessup offense was helped along by five Corban errors on the afternoon, three of which led to four unearned runs in the costly second inning.

Corban would grab one back via a pinch-hit RBI single from Nicholas Healey in the seventh; but in the end, the Warriors would fall in the day's first contest by a final score of 15-3.

Big innings proved deadly to the Navy and Gold throughout the weekend, with game two beginning with a William Jessup five-spot in the bottom of the first. Forced to play from behind, the Warrior offense struggled to find a spark for the remainder of the afternoon, collecting just five hits and one run in the seven-inning contest. The lone RBI came courtesy of Daniel Freiburger, who drove in John Dodson with his single in the sixth.

A bright spot for the Navy and Gold came from reliever Jacob Bowser, who figures to play a key role in the Corban bullpen. After a scoreless inning of work yesterday, the sophomore from Olympia, Wash. turned in another strong relief effort today, looking sharp in an inning and two-thirds of hitless ball.

The Warriors will now take the opportunity to regroup and address areas of growth before next weekend's road test.

Corban (0-4) will return to California for another face-off with a top-25 ranked Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) foe, this time challenging No. 24-ranked Westmont on Friday and Saturday.
