SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The No. 19 Corban University men's soccer team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Ore. The Warriors were unable to hold that lead until the finish, however, as Northwest Christian University tallied the next two goals. Fortunately for the Navy and Gold, Allando Brown would add the game-winning goal in the 70th minute to seal the 3-2 victory.
"We came out really flat today," said head coach Tim Kagey, "But it is nice to get three points when we aren't at our best. The group has done a lot of work to get into the position we are in. We are excited to prepare for the last two conference games."
Early on, it looked as if this match may be a runaway. Brown put the first shot that he took into the back of the net in the 14th minute, starting the Navy and Gold off strong. Following that, Corban tacked on another off the foot of Matheus Giron (28'), the team leader in goals. This afternoon's goal was his ninth tally of the season.
Andrew Mitchell spearheaded Northwest Christian's response, accounting for both of his team's goals. His first tally came during the 34th minute, sending the match to halftime with a 2-1 score in favor of the Warriors.
Mitchell struck again on his 67th minute off a rebound of his own previous shot, which was saved by Corban goalkeeper Justin Keegan. Not only did his second-half goal cap off a brace, but it also provided an equalizer for the hometown Beacons.
It did not take long, however, for the Warriors to jump back in front. Brown's second tally of the match secured the victory for the Navy and Gold in the 70th minute. Brown's brace adds to his running goal total on the season, which is now at five.
The Warriors totaled 16 shots, while the Beacons tallied just eight, and the Navy and Gold dominated in time of possession in the match.
With the loss, Northwest Christian moves to 2-10 overall and 2-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play.
The Warriors (12-0-2, 10-0-1 CCC) still boast an undefeated record in the 2019 season, as they head home next weekend for their final two regular season matches of the year. They will host Walla Walla University on Friday, November 1, and Rocky Mountain College on Sunday, November 3.
Corban's seniors will be honored prior to Friday's matchup with the Wolves.
