SALEM, Ore. – The (RV) Corban University men's basketball team rolled to a 114-73 victory over the cross-town rival Willamette University Bearcats on Saturday night. A strong showing from several Warrior players helped boost the Navy and Gold to the convincing triumph.
"It was important for us to play well this week, and continue to build upon the concept of playing with one another," said head coach Mitch Freeman. "Tonight, we were able to deal with Willamette's initial pressure and found several good shots for teammates. However, the Bearcats were able to expose our defense, and we need to get better next week."
The Warriors shot at an otherworldly clip in the matchup, as they drained their shots at a 60.9% rate in the rout. Corban's three-point shooting was also impressive, as they hit at a 57.1% (12-of-21) clip. AJ Hodges, Jake Estep, Tyler Wadleigh, and Mauricio Smith each hit two three-point shots in the contest, only missing a combined three shots from deep between the four of them.
The Warriors had just eight turnovers in the entire game, which boded well for their offensive success. Seven Corban steals led to 12 points off turnovers in the battle.
The bench stepped up in the bout, as they accounted for an impressive 66 points. Estep (15 points) and Smith (12 points) led the bench's charge to help bolster the team's offensive showing.
The standout performer in tonight's game, though, was Hodges. He shot an outstanding 8-of-11 (2-of-4 from three), accounting for 18 of the Navy and Gold's 114 points. He also added two rebounds to contribute on the clean-up side of the ball.
The Bearcats struggled to makes stops on the defensive end, but had some decent success on the offensive end. They shot 38.6% from the field to reach a total of 73 points in the matchup. Daniel Plumer was the standout for Willamette, as he scored a game-high 20 points and supplemented the team's success, recording seven assists and two rebounds.
Corban (6-1) will have a short hiatus to prepare for next weekend's Domino's Classic in Caldwell, Idaho, where they will face Lewis-Clark State College and Montana Western on November 22 and November 23, respectively.
