NAIA Championships Preview – Corban Volleyball Contending for National Title

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The 2019 NAIA Volleyball National Championships kick off tomorrow, and the No. 14-ranked Corban University volleyball team has its eyes on history. The Warriors will be joining 31 other squads in the battle for a national title.

The tournament will begin with pool play, where No. 2-seeded Corban will be joined by top-seeded Northwestern (Iowa), No. 3-seeded Lawrence Tech (Mich.), and fourth-seeded Martin Methodist (Tenn.).

Live stats/video for each of the matches will be available HERE.

The top-two teams out of each four-team pool in the tournament will advance to a single-elimination bracket starting on December 6.

The Warriors are led offensively by their All-Conference attacking duo of Cassie Cunningham and Avari Ridgway. Cunningham leads the squad with 2.71 kills per set, while Ridgway sits just behind her with 2.55.

At the net, Jacquelyn Clark has proven herself to be a steady force on both sides of the ball, hitting at a team-leading .344 clip (1.91 kills per set) while also tying for the team lead in blocks per set (0.80).

Warrior fans will also want to keep an eye on Adriana Aguayo, who battled injuries for the bulk of the first half of the fall campaign. The 2018 All-Conference outside hitter has the potential to be a significant playmaker in the coming days, possessing elite offensive ability.

Defensively, All-Conference Honorable Mention Kealani Ontai figures to once again play a crucial role for the Navy and Gold in this year's national tournament. Additionally, Lauren Condon has also been a staple in the Warriors' back row, averaging 2.27 digs a game heading into tomorrow's match.

Head coach Kim McLain has enjoyed a wealth of talent with her core of skilled setters, with Jadyn Mullen (5.73 assists per set) leading the trio in 2019. Rookie Ciarra Judson has made her present felt, particularly in the second half of the season, notching 3.94 assists per set. Meanwhile, Cierra Leopoldino brings plenty of experience on the national stage, as well as versatility to contribute in a variety of roles.

Below is a preview of the teams competing alongside Corban in Pool B, organized by the order in which the Warriors will compete against them.

(#3) Lawrence Tech – Tuesday, December 3 – 8:30 p.m. CST

No. 18-ranked Lawrence Tech is making its first NAIA Final-Site appearance in the program's history, ending the year with a 32-2 overall record (20-0 WHAC).

Lawrence Tech earned the berth to the Final Site following a perfect conference season, a regular-season conference title, and a conference tournament title. The Blue Devils rely heavily on Zakia Hunt, who ranks first on the team in kills (391) and kills per set (3.43). Hunt also leads the team in blocks, tallying 80 over the course of the fall campaign.

 (#4) Martin Methodist – Wednesday, December 4 – 8 p.m. CST

Also competing at the NAIA Final Site for the first time in its history, Martin Methodist (27-8, 12-1 SSAC) enters pool play as the four seed.

Rebecka Cronin leads the RedHawks offensively, tallying 2.4 kills per set this fall. Cronin is the leader of a balanced offensive attack, one that features five players—Cronin, Lauren Martin (271), Kara Nelms (265), Kaitlyn Lund (247) and Chandler Salvig (208)—with at least 200 putaways.

 (#1) Northwestern – Thursday, December 5 – 6 p.m. CST

Northwestern is ranked second in the NAIA Coaches' Top-25 Poll, and is a familiar foe for Corban. The Warriors were narrowly edged on the road against the Raiders in a five-set thriller on August 23.

The Raiders' record is 28-1 (16-0 GPAC), with their one loss of the season coming at the hands of the College of Saint Mary in their conference quarterfinals.

The squad is spearheaded offensively by Anna Wedel, who ranks 14th in the NAIA in kills per set with 4.2. The Orange City, Iowa native was twice named the NAIA National Attacker of the Week in 2019.

Another decorated member of the Raider roster, Lacey Wacker is also a two-time NAIA Player of the Week, entering tomorrow's match as the national leader in assists per set with 12.0.

Though the path ahead will undoubtedly be rigorous, Corban possesses more than enough firepower of its own.

With one of the most talented rosters in recent memory, the Warriors are confident heading into this week's national tournament. Stay tuned to CorbanWarriors.com for detailed coverage of each match.
