Corban Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Central Washington

KEIZER, Ore. – Falling in the opener on Sunday in 13 innings, 5-3, the Corban University baseball team dropped the nightcap and final game of the series to Central Washington University, 6-1. The wins for the Wildcats give CWU the series triumph over the Warriors.

"We are looking forward to starting conference next weekend," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "We will have a good week of practice to prepare."

A day after the two teams finished in an extra-inning tie, the Wildcats struck first with three runs in the opening frame on Sunday, taking advantage of a Warrior error to take the early advantage.

Corban pulled a pair of runs back in the third thanks to a Daniel Freiburger RBI double and a Nate Cantonwine RBI single.

In the seventh, the Navy and Gold tied the ballgame up via an RBI single to center from Maxwell Jeffrey, scoring Jared Bell.

The Warriors had opportunities to win it, as in the ninth, they left a runner stranded in scoring position, and in the 10th, 11th, and 12th, they did the same. In two of the extra frames, CWU's left fielder Colton Bunt made two full-stretch diving catches, saving the game for the Wildcats. Had he not made either of those catches, the Warriors would have scored and won the contest.

In the top of the 13th, Justin Hampson stepped up with one man on and two outs, and he blasted a shot over the right-field fence, giving CWU a lead it would not relinquish.

The Warriors were unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the frame, resulting in the tough two-run extra-inning loss.

Jeffrey, Freiburger, and Cantonwine all finished with two hits in the loss, while the Warriors left 15 runners on base as a team.

On the mound, Zack Simon went six innings, dispersing seven hits while allowing three runs, only one of which was earned.

Game two saw the Warriors fall behind by six runs, and while scoring one run in the final frame and then loading the bases, nothing more came in the five-run defeat.

Corban (2-10-1) begins NAIA West action next weekend when it heads east to take on Lewis-Clark State College. Doubleheaders are set for both Saturday and Sunday in Lewiston.
