Corban Baseball Earns Two Big Road Wins in Doubleheader against Lewis-Clark State

LEWISTON, Idaho – Playing in the first half of the two teams' rescheduled four-game set from February 23-24, the Corban University baseball team traveled to Lewiston, Idaho for a midweek doubleheader against (RV) Lewis-Clark State College on Thursday afternoon.

Combining for a pair of the squad's most complete all-around performances of the 2019 season, the Navy and Gold walked away with the program's first-ever doubleheader sweep of Lewis-Clark State at Harris Field, winning game one by a final score of 6-1 and game two by a 5-1 margin.

Corban fired on all cylinders throughout the day, committing just one error defensively and limiting the potent LCSC offense to just 10 hits between the two games.

It was once again Jonathan Russomano paving the way in game one, with the senior from Tarzana, Calif. outdueling the 2018 NAIA-West Pitcher of the Year in Tyler Burch. Russomano was brilliant in five innings of work, allowing just two hits and no runs en route to his fourth win of the year.

Jacob Asa would carry it the rest of the way, delivering four innings of quality relief to earn his second save.

Situational hitting was key for the Warrior offense in the victory, with four of Corban's six runs coming via the sacrifice fly. The other two resulted from a pair of RBI doubles, one of which came off the bat of Brendan Yawn (1-for-3, one run, one RBI) with two outs in the third, and the other courtesy of Jared Bell (1-for-3, two RBIs) in the following frame.

Maxwell Jeffrey (2-for-4, two runs), Daniel Freiburger (2-for-4) and Tanner Marsh (2-for-3, two runs, one RBI) all finished with a pair of hits in the opener.

The Corban staff picked up right where it left off in the back half of the doubleheader, with Zachary Filos getting the nod in game two. Aside from a solo blast in the fifth off the bat of Makana Victorine, Filos was otherwise unblemished, scattering four opposing hits and striking out a pair in his third win of the year.

The baton would be passed to Zackary Simon, who faced the minimum in three perfect frames on the hill, striking out six LCSC batters in a dominating showing in relief. The rookie bridged the gap between Filos and the Warrior closer, Jacob Bowser, who handled the ninth to seal the doubleheader sweep.

Offensively, none of Corban's five game-two runs came via a base hit. The Navy and Gold pushed across a trio of unearned runs in the first, thanks to two LCSC errors, a passed ball, two walks, and a hit-batsman.

The Warriors were able to tack on another in the fourth via a Jared Bell fielder's choice, then a heads-up baserunning play from Daniel Freiburger in the next frame gave Corban its fifth and final run of game-two.

The LCSC defense would total five errors in the contest, a new season-high for the squad from Lewiston.

The win halts a seven-game winning streak for LCSC, with Corban capturing the program's first-ever doubleheader sweep at Harris Field. The last time Corban laid claim to a doubleheader sweep of any kind against the perennial powerhouse was in 2013, in a pair of games that head coach Derek Legg, pitching coach Caleb Virtue, and assistant pitching coach Jacob Kopra all played significant roles in.

Corban (10-17-1, 8-6 NAIA West) will return to the diamond next weekend (March 30-31), once again facing off with Lewis-Clark State. This time, however, Corban will play host, with the series opener set to get underway at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Volcanoes Stadium.
