LEWISTON, Idaho – A game-tying two-run homer by Zackary Simon in game one would end up going to waste, as the Corban University baseball team fell 7-6 to (RV) Lewis-Clark State College via a walk-off base-on-balls in the bottom half of the frame. Game two was all LCSC, as the home team combined for 13 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cruise to a 15-2 win in the regular-season finale between the two squads.
"I'm happy with how we played in game one," said head coach Derek Legg, "And I told our guys to have a short memory regarding game two. Now we need to focus on getting ready to compete this weekend."
With the two losses, Corban moves to 12-15 in NAIA-West play during the 2019 season, just a half-game ahead of the 10-14 College of Idaho Yotes for third place in the conference standings. Whichever team finishes in the third-place spot at the conclusion of the regular season will earn a trip to the California Pacific postseason tournament, which is set to take place down in Mesa, Ariz. on May 5-7.
Today's doubleheader marked the conclusion of the regular-season series between Corban and LCSC, with the squad from Lewiston taking the final six meetings to claim the season series, 6-2.
In an effort to preserve the team's normal starting rotation for this weekend's matchups with College of Idaho, Corban utilized a combined effort from the bullpen on the mound today. Mason Stottlemyre got the ball in game one, and Michael Northrop got the nod in game two, the first career start of both pitchers' respective careers.
Corban jumped ahead early in the opener, as Estenio Sede continued his impressive opening act with a two-RBI double in the first. Tanner Marsh would come home on a wild pitch in the second to make the lead 3-0, but it wouldn't last long, as LCSC would score two in the second and three in the third to capture a 5-3 advantage.
The Navy and Gold made it a one-run game in the fifth after Jared Bell scored on another wild pitch, but the home team would get it right back in the seventh on an RBI sac fly from Riley Way.
Simon wouldn't let Corban go quietly in the ninth, knotting the contest at six with a booming home run (2) to center. The Navy and Gold bullpen would be unable to preserve the tie in the bottom of the frame, however, surrendering a bases-loaded walk to force in the winning run.
Lewis-Clark State hopped in front early in game two with a pair of second-inning runs, but David Yoppini erased that deficit with a two-run single in the fourth, making the most of his third start of the 2019 season.
In what was shaping up to be another close contest, the next two defensive innings would prove disastrous for Corban. The Navy and Gold surrendered a combined 13 runs on 10 hits in the fourth and fifth, committing three errors along the way. Lewis-Clark State would end up taking the finale by a 15-2 (seven innings) final score.
Corban (14-26-1, 12-15 NAIA West) will now go head-to-head with the Yotes in a pivotal conclusion to the Warriors' 2019 conference regiment. A series win for either side will have crucial postseason implications. The four-game set is slated to occur on Friday and Saturday down in Caldwell, Idaho, with first pitch of the series opener scheduled for 1 p.m. MST.
