Corban Baseball and Academy of Art Play to Day-One Split

KEIZER, Ore. – Kicking off its final regular-season series of 2019, the Corban University baseball team split the first half of a four-game set with Academy of Art University on Friday. The Urban Knights took game one by a final score of 6-4 (eight innings), and the Navy and Gold responded with a 6-3 triumph in the back half of the doubleheader.

"It was a great day to go out and play some baseball," said head coach Derek Legg. "We're hoping to go out there and send our seniors off on a good note tomorrow."

Both of the matchups were seven-inning contests, which will also be the case for each of the games tomorrow.

Jonathan Russomano—making his final start on the hill at Volcanoes Stadium—got the nod in game one, tossing four innings and allowing five hits and two runs (one earned). The current NAIA-West leader in wins finished without a decision, leaving his 2019 regular-season record at 6-5.

Academy of Art's Noah Daubin got the scoring started in the opener, driving in Elijah Smith with an RBI single in the top of the first. Corban answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the frame, punctuated by a two-out RBI single from Ben Ross.

After Academy of Art tacked on one in the third and two in the sixth, the Navy and Gold trailed 4-2 with just two at-bats left. Nate Cantonwine erased the deficit with one swing of the bat, however, blasting a mammoth two-run shot (1) over the right field fence to knot the game at four.

Corban had a prime opportunity to win it in the bottom of the seventh, putting the walk-off run 90 feet away with just one out. But Academy of Art sidewinder Gonzo Rios was able to induce a strike out and a line out to escape the threat.

Rios (5-5) would end up earning the win after the Urban Knight offense plated two in top of the eighth, while southpaw Galen Manhard sealed the triumph with a scoreless effort in the bottom half.

Corban's Estenio Sede (2-for-4, run), Justin Tow (2-for-3, run), and Ross (2-for-4, RBI) all finished with a pair of knocks in the series-opening defeat.

The Warriors struck first in game two, courtesy of an RBI double down the right field line from Jared Berard. The sophomore from Tacoma, Wash. would end up having a massive game at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, while also scoring half of the team's runs.

Defensive miscues would end up haunting the Urban Knights throughout the remainder of the contest, as a two-error play led to a run for the Warriors in the third, and a pair of Corban's six runs came via wild pitches.

Senior John Dodson provided one of the game's biggest knocks, torching an RBI double up against the base of the left-field fence to bring home Berard in the fourth.

On the hill, Jackson Arnsdorf was credited with the win, throwing an inning and a third in relief of Zachary Filos, and allowing a lone unearned run. Drew Scherrer was sharp in his two innings of work, earning the first save of his collegiate career in the triumph.

The Warriors (19-27-1) and Urban Knights (15-25) will be back in action tomorrow, with two more games—starting at 12 p.m.—scheduled to take place at Volcanoes Stadium. Corban's eight seniors will be honored prior to first pitch of the doubleheader.
