KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – After a disappointing couple of games yesterday, the Corban University baseball team showed up in force on Sunday afternoon, sweeping the second half of a four-game series with Oregon Tech, 9-3 and 13-10. With the two wins, the Warriors were able to salvage a series split in the significant NAIA-West series.
"It was good to see the boys come back and play well today," said head coach Derek Legg. "We are going to work to build on that as we continue to play some important games down the stretch."
Rather surprisingly, Legg gave the ball to Jacob Bowser to start game one of the doubleheader. At a time when the Warriors were in dire need of a strong performance on the mound, the 6'2" right-hander—traditionally used as a closer for the Navy and Gold—turned in a strong performance in the first start of his Warrior career.
For the first time in the series, Corban drew first blood in the contest. The Warriors pounded out four-straight hits to lead off a four-run second inning, with Ben Ross and Nate Cantonwine each bringing home runs with RBI singles, and Jared Berard and Tanner Marsh both collecting RBIs with sacrifice flies.
Berard would drive in another with a fielder's choice in the fourth, extending the Corban lead to 5-1 at the time.
Oregon Tech would eventually knock Bowser out of the game midway through the sixth, plating a pair of runs in the inning to round out the sophomore's final stat line: five innings pitched, three runs, eight hits. The gritty performance was exactly what Corban needed, at a time when the Warriors needed it most.
Offensively, Corban would end up providing nine runs in support of the right-hander, putting the game out of reach with a four-spot in the eighth. Maxwell Jeffrey got things going in the four-run frame, leading off the inning with a base hit, and eventually being brought home on a Daniel Freiburger single. Ben Ross provided the knockout blow later in the inning, mashing a two-run homer (3) to left.
That offensive momentum continued right into game two for the Navy and Gold, as Freiburger provided an early two-run lead with a double in the first. The Warriors would score in each of the first three frames, as a Josh Ebert two-bagger, a string of wild pitches, and another booming blast from Ross (4) would make it a 7-0 ballgame after two and a half complete.
Zackary Simon—who got the start and the win in the matchup—would surrender his only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third, tossing six innings of four-hit ball to earn the first victory of his collegiate career.
The Warriors would end up 16 hits and 13 runs in the triumph, with Ebert (2-for-4, two runs), Freiburger (3-for-5, three RBIs), Cantonwine (3-for-5, two runs), and Brendan Yawn (2-for-5, RBI) leading the way for a lineup that saw every member of the starting order collect at least one hit.
Corban (12-23-1, 10-12 NAIA West) will now look ahead to a crucial conference series next weekend, as the Warriors will host first-place British Columbia on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The series will begin with a single contest on Friday night, set to take place at 6 p.m. under the lights at Volcanoes Stadium.
