No. 11 Corban Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller over Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The No. 11-ranked Corban University volleyball team experienced its fiercest Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) challenge yet, battling for five sets with The Evergreen State College Geoducks on Saturday evening. The Warriors were able to endure the Geoducks' late push, moving to 4-0 in conference play with a nail-biting five-game triumph (25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-10).

"Evergreen is a tough team," said head coach Kim McLain. "We knew we had to pass and serve well in order to stay with our game plan. We struggled at times, lacking consistency. But in the end, it was great to come out with two road wins this weekend in the tough CCC."

The Warriors took set one with relative ease, but the pesky Geoducks answered back with a win in game two. After a third-set victory, the Navy and Gold had a chance to put the match away in the fourth set, but Evergreen hit at a .419 clip as a team to force a fifth.

Corban stormed out of the gates in the deciding game, claiming 10 of the set's first 12 points. Once again, the Geoducks wouldn't go down easily, mustering a comeback attempt with five-straight points. It would prove to be too little, too late, however, as the Warriors endured the late run to cap off a perfect 2-0 weekend of CCC competition.

It's the first loss of the season for the Geoducks, who possess a high-powered offensive arsenal. Led by Zoe Shaw (26 kills, .354 attack percentage), Renita Gray (13 kills, .152 attack percentage), and Lily Stewart (11 kills, .267 attack percentage), Evergreen saw three players with double-figure kills in the defeat.

The Warriors' balanced attack was on full display, with three players (Cassie Cunningham, Avari Ridgway, Jacquelyn Clark) ending the night with at least 10 kills. Cunningham led the team in the category with 13, while Ridgway added 12 of her own. For the second-straight night, Clark made her presence felt on both sides of the net, tallying 11 putaways (.455 attack percentage) and a team-high seven blocks.

Jadyn Mullen (28 assists) and Cierra Leopoldino (22 assists) dished out a combined total of 50 assists, while Kealani Ontai (17 digs) and Lauren Condon (16 digs) shared the bulk of the defensive load.

Corban (7-3, 4-0 CCC) will return home next weekend for another crucial weekend of CCC play, hosting No. 5-ranked Southern Oregon University on Friday and Oregon Tech on Saturday. First serve for both matches is slated for 7 p.m.
