Warrior Women’s Soccer Plays to a 2-2 Draw with No. 7 Eastern Oregon

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team was facing a daunting task on Saturday at the CFC Soccer Complex in facing No. 7 ranked Eastern Oregon, who had not allowed a goal in their previous 243 minutes played. The Warriors proved themselves by giving the Mountaineers all they could handle in a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes played.

The first half was an even affair, as the score was 1-1 heading into the break. The Warriors' seven shots were nearly identical to the Mountaineers' eight. After each team put a ball in the back of the net in the early stages of the second half, the Corban defense stood tall in the waning moments of regulation, as Eastern's attempts to take the lead in the second half were stifled.

The extra periods were stalemates, as each team tallied only one shot in the totality of overtime.

"This was a really good weekend to open up conference play," said head coach Derek Faulkner. "We have been in a mode of consistent growth and getting better, and this weekend gave us more experience and information to evaluate and help us moving forward. We are excited to get back to work and challenge each other this week."

The Mountaineers were first to find the treasure, as Nan Kiebert–who scored both of the team's goals–headed in a cross from teammate Sarah Mitchell in the 11th minute. The Warriors. However, were not fazed by the early deficit, as they struck pay dirt on a turnover in the box by the Eastern Oregon defense. Klarissa Barajas was the beneficiary of the miscue just before halftime, scoring in the 40th minute for her first goal in the Navy and Gold kits. Barajas' goal snapped a streak of 243 straight minutes played by the Mountaineers without allowing a ball to reach the back of the net.

Corban roared out of the gates to begin the second half, as Hannah Shore delivered a one-time strike into the lower left corner of the net in the 47th minute to beat Mountaineer goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell. Shore was assisted by Skyla Vogelpohl. The Warriors allowed the equalizer just seven minutes later to Kiebert, who proved to be a nuisance, especially with her head, as both of her goals were of the header variety.

Despite allowing two goals, Warrior keeper Malie Kuia was impressive, as she stopped a total of 12 out of 14 shots blasted on net by Mountaineer attackers. Kuia is still yet to tally the first loss of her collegiate goalkeeping career through five matches.

Corban will spend next weekend in Portland, Ore., as they will visit Warner Pacific University on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. The following day, the Warrior women will face Multnomah University at 11:30 a.m. The Navy and Gold (4-2-1, (1-0-1)) will strive to improve their conference standing with two wins on the road.
