PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team took care of business in Portland on Friday by handing Warner Pacific a 3-0 loss on their home turf. A slow first half did not discourage the warriors, as they put up two strong second-half goals to finish off the Knights for good.
It was the day of Klarissa Barajas, who scored goals No. 2 and 3 of her career in the Navy and Gold in the contest.
"Any win on the road is a good win," said head coach Derek Faulkner. "We had a slow start but got things rolling in the second half, and we felt much better about the result that we put together."
The Warriors first goal came in just the 10th minute from Riley Smetzler, who found the back of the net for the first time this season. That was all that was going on in the first half of play, as Corban headed into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Barajas stole the show in the second half by notching the final two tallies of the contest in the 78th and 89th minutes.
The Warrior defense was phenomenal all day long, as the Navy and Gold only allowed a single shot to be taken in the entirety of the game. Goalkeeper Malie Kuia faced what has been the simplest clean sheet of her young collegiate career, and is still undefeated (5-0-1) as the Corban starting net-minder.
The Warriors outshot the Knights by a large margin, 17-1 to be exact. Following the dominating display, the Warriors have moved to 2-0-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play and will go up against Multnomah University on Saturday to push toward their third conference win.
Corban has enjoyed a strong start to their conference slate, but are not satisfied, as the conference pollsters may be looking in their direction in the near future if their level of play continues to improve.
