PORTLAND, Ore. – The (RV) Corban University men's soccer team defeated the Warner Pacific University Knights on Friday by a score of 4-1. The Warriors found contributions from many pieces as they ended up with another solid conference win.
The depth of the team was a topic of discussion for head coach Tim Kagey after the match.
"We started off a bit slower than we would have liked, but we responded well," said Kagey. "It is great seeing so many different goal scorers in each game that we are playing."
It is obvious that this team does not always need their top players at top form at all times, though that is the goal. While the team may have looked a bit sluggish coming out of the gate, the players banded together to find another gear and bury the opposition.
The opening salvo was fired by the Warriors in the 20th minute by Hakeem Smith, and the game would be 1-0 until the 43rd minute when Arturo Bahena of the Knights guided in a tally for WPU. However, the Navy and Gold would not even allow the Knights to take a breath before Allando Brown put a header off of a corner kick from Camilo Avendano between the pipes for the Warriors' second goal in the 45th minute just before halftime.
The Second half was all the Navy and Gold, as Charles Cleyton and Kohl Hurtado had goals that put the game completely out of the Knights' reach. The two second-half goals were scored in the 54th and 69th minutes. The final score was 4-1 in favor of the Warriors.
Camilo Avendano was a key table-setter for Corban as he was credited with two assists on the afternoon. He played a big part in allowing the Warriors to take and extend their lead.
Nic Farr ends up with another win, as he allowed just the one goal in the match on seven attempted shots. He now sits at 4-0-1 on the season and will look to improve upon that record in the near future.
Corban is set to face the Lions of Multnomah University in Portland on Saturday as they shoot to improve their conference record to 4-0. The Coaches' Top-25 could come knocking on their door soon enough.
