LINCOLN, Calif. – The Corban University baseball team wrapped up its season-opening series against No. 14-ranked William Jessup University on Saturday afternoon, falling by final scores of 7-1 and 5-3 (eight innings). The Navy and Gold held a three-run lead for the majority of the series finale, but the hometown Warriors rattled off five-unanswered runs to seal the four-game sweep.
"I'm really glad the season is underway," said head coach Derek Legg. "This weekend gave us the opportunity to learn the areas we need to improve and grow in our strengths."
Four Jessup arms combined to limit the Corban offense to just four hits in the first game of the day, with Max Moreno—who surrendered the lone run of the contest after taking over for starter Brad Jones—being credited with the victory after three and a third innings of work.
Nate Cantonwine was responsible for Corban's scoring, driving in Jared Bell with an RBI single in the sixth, part of a 2-for-4 effort at the dish.
For the third-straight game, Jessup struck in their first plate appearance, scratching across runs in the first and second frames. It was a four-run third that dealt the most damage, however, knocking Corban's Mason Shaw out of the ballgame.
Kawaiola Takemura (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) set the table out of the leadoff spot, while Anders Green (3-for-4, RBI, R) and Joseph Luevano (3-for-4, 2 RBIs) each collected a trio of hits.
Looking to avoid the sweep in the seven-inning series finale, Jacob Bowser got the ball in game four, serving as a bright spot in five dominating innings of work. The junior sidewinder surrendered just one hit, stymying the powerful Jessup bats.
Brendan Rodegerdts helped Corban draw first blood in the finale, pushing an RBI double down the right field line to score Justin Tow in the top half of the second. An inning later, Zach Campbell expanded the Navy and Gold lead to 3-0 with a two-run single to left.
The Jessup offense wouldn't remain quiet forever, however, using the long ball to quickly erase the deficit. Green got the squad on the board with an opposite-field solo shot off Jacob Asa in the sixth.
With just three outs left, Jesus Duran tied the game with a two-run homer down the left field line in the seventh inning, forcing extras. In the eighth, it was Dylan Moser who played the hero, blasting a walk-off two-run long ball to left to seal the sweep.
Brett Wetteland was credited with the victory after an inning out of the 'pen, while Drew Scherrer was saddled with the loss.
The Navy and Gold outhit the high-powered Jessup offense in the defeat, 7-6, with Rodegerdts and Maxwell Jeffrey each going 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the way.
Corban (0-4) will return to California next weekend, taking on (RV) Hope International University and The Master's University in four more games against Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) foes.
