Warrior Men’s Basketball Plays Nip and Tuck at NCU, Falling 86-84

BOX SCORE

EUGENE, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team traveled just south on Interstate 5 to face the Northwest Christian University Beacons on Tuesday night. In an affair that was tight throughout, the Beacons prevailed in the waning seconds, 86-84, thanks to a game-winner from senior guard Logan Davis.

"We battled tonight," said head coach Mitch Freeman. "It was a game of runs, and down the stretch, they made a few more plays than we did. We gave ourselves an opportunity in the last few seconds, but it wasn't to be."

The Navy and Gold's 47.1% clip from the field in the matchup was a respectable number, but they were outshot by the hometown Beacons. The NCU shooters hit 49.2% of their shots, and drilled 46.7% of their threes, making 14 of them on the evening.

Mauricio Smith helped the Navy and Gold stay competitive throughout the matchup, having scored 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting—four of which were three-pointers—and was the rebounding leader by far, scooping up 11 rebounds for an impressive double-double. The next closest Warrior had four rebounds. He also added a rejection and a steal to his gaudy numbers on the night.

Tyler Wadleigh led the team in dimes with six, in addition to scoring the second highest point total for the Warriors, with 16.

It was a strong team performance from the Beacons, who boasted four players in double-figures. Stevie Schlabach (15), Davis (14), Kaden Sand (14), and Ernest Ugoagu (11), were the go-to shooters all night for NCU. With three seconds left, tied at 84, Davis found a great look for himself and cashed in. The Beacons would hold that lead until the final buzzer, staving off a Smith three-point attempt at the horn.

The loss for the Warriors (10-14, 4-10 CCC) was their second loss to Northwest Christian of a deficit of two or fewer points.  The Warriors will have to have short memories, as they head back home next weekend to host Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon University, in that order. The Owls and Raiders will face off against Corban on Friday (February 7) and Saturday (February 8), respectively.
