Fourth-Quarter Surge Lifts Corban Women’s Basketball Past C of I, 66-61

CALDWELL, Idaho – An incredible closing quarter helped the Corban University women's basketball team shock College of Idaho on its homecourt on Friday night. Trailing 56-47 heading into the final stanza, the Warriors outscored the Yotes by a 19-5 margin in the fourth quarter to earn a 66-61 victory.

"What at amazing demonstration of never giving up and playing hard and playing together for 40 minutes," said head coach Bill Pilgeram after the win. "We easily could've hung our heads and stopped when things weren't going our way, but we showed a ton of heart and fought back with defense first!"

Corban jumped out to a 17-14 lead in the opening quarter, but the Yotes responded with a dominating 27-point showing in the second quarter to take a seven-point (41-34) advantage into the locker room at the half.

College of Idaho expanded that lead in the third, but momentum began to shift in Corban's favor at the end of the period. The resilient Warriors would go on to stifle the Yotes' offense in the final quarter, limited their foe to just one made field goal (1-14).

"Holding them to five points in the fourth quarter was a total team effort," Pilgeram added.

Offensively, 14 of Corban's 19 fourth-quarter points came in the paint, with Shaelie Burgess scoring six of her 13 points in the final 10 minutes. Throughout the contest, the Navy and Gold dominated at the glass, outscoring the Yotes 38-16 in the key.

Burgess would end the night with her second double-double of the season, notching 13 points and 11 boards.

Coming off the bench, Fallon Hanson turned in the best performance of her young career, going 4-of-8 from the floor en route to a career-best 11 points.

Jordan Woodvine was Corban's leading scorer, notching 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in an impressive all-around performance.

College of Idaho's Kenadee French matched Woodvine with a game-high 19 points (7-11 FG), leading the Yotes with a strong effort off the bench. With the defeat, College of Idaho falls to 4-10 (2-3 CCC) in 2019-20.

It's a strong start to 2020 for the Warriors (9-5, 5-1 CCC), who have now won five-straight Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) battles.

The squad will look to continue that streak tomorrow in a high-profile rematch of last year's CCC Tournament Championship. Corban will tip-off with No. 18-ranked Eastern Oregon at 5:30 p.m. in La Grande, Ore.
