Corban Baseball Splits with College of Idaho to Begin Conference Play

KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team played an even and exciting couple of matchups with the Yotes of College of Idaho. Game one fell the Warriors' way, taking advantage of porous bullpen pitching, on the way to a 11-4 victory. However, game two went the other way around, as College of Idaho was able to stymie the Corban offense in the late game by a score of 6-1.

"I was excited to see our guys battle back twice throughout the first game," said head coach Derek Legg. "I like that about this year's team. We are still working on having a consistent mentality and effort, but once we figure that out… something special is coming."

Each squad started game one with some offensive output, as the Yotes led off the game by picking up a run off of Warrior starter Mason Shaw in the very first inning. On the bright side, the lead was quickly erased when Justin Tow delivered a two-run double out of the clean-up spot in the bottom half of the first. The Warriors would hold their 2-1 advantage until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, the College of Idaho offense came alive against Shaw, mustering three more runs to put them in the lead 4-2. But once again, the Warriors would not lie down and die, as they picked up two runs to tie the tally at four.

The seventh inning was the big one for the hitters wearing Navy and Gold, as they scored five runs in the inning. The team nearly hit for the cycle collectively in the stanza, as Maxwell Jeffrey tripled, Jared Berard doubled, Nate Cantonwine singled, Trevor Hazlett singled, and Zack Simon singled.

The game's top performers for Corban were Tow with a 2-for-4 showing and three runs batted in, as well as Simon who tagged three hits on his way to a two RBI showing.

Jacob Asa came out of the bullpen with force in this one, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing just a single base hit. He also struck out three batters.

Game two was a bitter one, as College of Idaho came out of the gate with a vengeance and was ready to put what had happened in the earlier game in the past. In the second inning, three runs were scored off of Corban starting pitcher Jackson Arnsdorf, two of which were earned. The Yotes would then add single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to increase their lead to its largest size of six runs.

The Corban offense would finally get on the board in the sixth stemming from an Estenio Sede reach on an error, but it was just too little too late for the Warriors in the second game of the day.

Catcher Ben Dudley for the Yotes was 3-for-3 in his only start of the day for C of I. He was also able to drive in a run and earn a base on balls.

Silas Shumate, Ben Tighe, and Jared Bowman combined to allow zero earned runs in the entirety of the second game today. Shumate allowed just four hits in 6.2 frames, while Tighe and Bowman each allowed one or fewer in their innings of work.

The Navy and Gold (5-12, 1-1 NAIA West) will hope to rebound tomorrow against the same Yotes to gain some ground in a tough and crowded postseason grouping
