Warrior Men’s Basketball Digs Early Hole in 86-78 Defeat at the Hands of No. 8 SOU

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team was poised to put an end to a rough three-game skid on Saturday night while hosting the No. 8-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon University. Sadly, for the Navy and Gold, the SOU shooters came out of the gate hot, as they built an early lead that they would never relinquish. It was the Raiders who held on to claim the victory by a final tally of 86-78.

"We gave ourselves a chance and were in striking distance for the final six minutes of the game versus an experienced SOU team," said head coach Mitch Freeman. "I was proud of how we competed, especially in the second half. We never gave in. Our guys have been working hard, and I know that if we keep working hard, then good things will happen."

The Navy and Gold (45.5%) actually outshot Southern (45.0%) from the field in the matchup in terms of percentage, however, the Raiders drained four more three-point shots than the Warriors, and SOU enjoyed a rebounding advantage of 41-39.

It was Tyler Wadleigh who accounted for Corban's scoring for the most part in the game. He led the team with 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting, while also dishing out six dimes for his teammates. Only one other player on the Navy and Gold squad reached double-figures.

Denis Kirichenko came off the bench to produce some meaningful minutes in the late-going. His 10 points were good for the second highest total on the team in the tilt. He was a perfect 2-of-2 from long range in addition to adding three rebounds to his stat totals.

Dominique Lawrence registered a strong showing in limited minutes for Corban, earning a nine-point, 10 rebound performance in just 16 minutes on the court.

Southern Oregon had five players in double-figures in points, but it was Aaron Borich who really stole the show for the Raiders. He shot 8-of-14 from the field, while draining six shots from downtown in none attempts. His 25 points were nearly double Teron Bradford and Tate Hoffman's next closest 13-point total.

The defeat marks the fourth straight for the Warriors (10-16, 4-12 CCC), who have road games coming up in Portland against Warner Pacific and Multnomah on Friday and Saturday. Corban will look to start some momentum in the right direction, hoping to put two more wins under their belt as the season dwindles down.
