Corban Women’s Soccer Comes from Behind to Earn 2-1 Win over Eagles

SALEM, Ore. – After surrendering an early first-half goal, the Corban University women's soccer team stormed back with a pair of tallies of their own, coming from behind to defeat Northwest University at the CFC Soccer Complex, 2-1.

"We started off slower than I would've liked, but we responded well after going down a goal," said director of soccer Tim Kagey. "We will look to start faster tomorrow."

The visitors struck first in the match, with Callie Wright giving the Eagles an early lead with a 13th-minute goal. Halley Marschall assisted the match's first tally.

Corban didn't waste time finding an equalizer, however, as Juliana Pires and Maria-Frances Serrant teamed up for a clinical connection in the 27th minute. Pires forged forward on a breakaway opportunity, and found Serrant with a pinpoint pass, which Serrant gathered in stride and then quickly rocketed into the right-side netting from just inside the box.

Less than 10 minutes later, Pires scored a goal of her own (34'), hooking a brilliant strike just inside the far-right post after collecting a pass from Emma Rosner. It was a great response from the Navy and Gold, which seemed unfazed after surrendering the early goal.

The remainder of the contest was a gritty affair, as the Warriors looked to cushion their lead, and the Eagles attempted to draw even.

Corban was able to withstand the Eagles' furious late attack, however, as the defense held strong to preserve the victory. Makida Herbert turned in another exceptional performance in net, punching out a number of promising Eagle passes into the box and finishing the triumph with a pair of saves.

The Warriors (8-2, 4-2 CCC) will compete again tomorrow, hosting The Evergreen State College at 6 p.m. under the lights at the CFC Soccer Complex.
