Corban Men’s Wrestling Faces Top CCC Foes at Mile-High Duals

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Corban University men's wrestling team met up with a trio of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) foes down in Prescott, Ariz. on Friday, facing off with (RV) Vanguard University, No. 13 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Arizona Christian University in the Mile-High Duals, hosted by Embry-Riddle.

The Warriors toppled Vanguard by a 27-23 score, upset the No. 13-ranked Eagles on their home mat via a 27-18 tally, and fell in their final dual of the day against Arizona Christian, 35-15.

In its first counting dual of the 2021-22 season, Corban got off to a strong start against the Lions. After a forfeit at 125 pounds, Wesley Vasquez picked up six points by pinning his foe in the 133-pound clash.

Yasyf Sorensen also won by way of fall in the 157-pound match, turning in a gritty effort for the Navy and Gold. At 174 pounds, Matthew Bartlett added three points to the Warrior team tally when he won via decision, and Christian Macoy (197 pounds) put the dual on ice with a pivotal pin in his 197-pound matchup.

In the second dual of the day, the Navy and Gold stunned No. 13-ranked ERAU, 27-18. The Warriors had to come from behind, falling behind 18-0 after the first three weight classes. A win by way of fall from Kane Nixon (149 pounds) helped Corban get some momentum, then back-to-back-to-back pins from David Rubio (fall, 165 pounds), Bartlett (fall), and Tyson Stover (decision, 184 pounds) helped the Warriors vault ahead of the hometown team.

The middle weights excelled in the third and final dual of the day, as Nixon (fall), Sorensen (fall), and Rubio (decision) each triumphed in the contest with Arizona Christian, but it wouldn't be enough for the Navy and Gold, as the Firestorm claimed victories at the 125, 133, 141, 174, 184, 197, and heavyweight classes.

Corban (2-1) will remain in Prescott tomorrow for the Mile-High Open, which will take place all day Saturday.
