LEWISTON, Idaho – The Corban University men's basketball team was handed their first loss of the campaign on Friday afternoon. The Warriors started slow in the opening half against Montana Western, letting the Bulldogs explode out to an 18-4 lead. Corban fought back, cutting the deficit to just five heading into halftime. However, the Bulldogs fought off all Corban comeback attempts in the second half, eventually taking the game by a score of 73-64.
"Tonight was a tough night for the Warriors," said head coach Taylor Kelly. "Give Montana Western credit, their coaching staff did a great job of getting them ready to play. We came out flat and were never able to establish a rhythm in the game. We will be ready to play tomorrow and are looking forward to another opportunity to compete."
The Warriors shot 44.3% from the field in the contest but shot well below their season average from beyond the arc, at just a 22.2% clip. Corban also received a quality effort from their bench on the afternoon, as they combined for 28 points.
Taylor Anderson led the Navy and Gold with a season high 15 points on a 7-of-10 shooting effort. Jordan Newt (10 PTS, 4-of-11 FG) was the only other Warrior in double-figures on the afternoon.
For the Bulldogs, Jaylen Hodges (29 PTS, 10-of-16 FG), Michael Haverfield (14 PTS, 5-of-11 FG), and Jamal Stephenson (11 PTS, 3-of-5 FG, 2-of-4 3PT) reached double-figures to pace the Montana Western offensive attack.
It was the first loss of the 2021-22 campaign for Corban. The Warriors (2-1) will round out this weekend's games against the University of Providence tomorrow afternoon in Lewiston, Idaho. Tip is slated for 4 p.m. MST.
