LEWISTON, Idaho – The Corban University men's basketball team defeated the University of Providence (Mont.) on Saturday afternoon in a neutral site matchup, bouncing back from yesterday's defeat with an 86-72 triumph. Ten different Warriors chipped in offensively in one of their most balanced performances of the young 2021-22 campaign.
"We needed everyone tonight and we had a great group effort," said head coach Taylor Kelly. "I think some things started to click for us defensively in the second half and you could see that in how we were able to separate. We can't wait to get back to Warrior Nation!"
The Navy and Gold withstood an early run from the Argos and dominated the scoring the rest of the way. Corban turned in a 34-of-65 (52.3%) performance from the floor and had seven different players hit from beyond the arc en route to a 36% mark (9-of-26 3PT). The defense was stellar in the contest, forcing 18 turnovers, leading to 20 points off turnovers. The reserves were exceptional as the Warriors again showcased the depth of their roster, outscoring Providence 34-17 in bench points.
Darius Henderson (18 PTS, 9 REB) led all players in scoring and rebounds to pace the effort. The 18 points and nine boards both are new season highs for Henderson in the Navy and Gold. The transfer from the University of Montana looks like he will be a major piece of the Warriors success throughout the season.
Psalm Maduakor (12 PTS, 7 REB) and Jordan Newt (11 PTS, 4-of-9 FG) both scored in double figures for the Warriors. While Denis Kirichenko (9 PTS, 4-of-6), Kendall Moore (8 PTS, 4 AST) and Mauricio Smith (8 PTS, 4-of-5 FG) also chipped in efficient offensive performances.
For the Argos, Dawson Fowler (16 PTS, 4-of-7 FG), Jake Olsen (14 PTS, 6-of-7 FG), and Rashee Stocks (13 PTS, 4-of-12) reached the double-digit scoring mark in the defeat.
The Warriors (3-1) split their two games on the weekend in Lewiston, Idaho at the Clearwater River Lodge and Casino Classic. Corban travels down I-5 to Bushnell University in Eugene, Ore. for another tournament next weekend. Pacific Union College (Calif.) will be the Navy and Gold's first opponent at the event, with tip slated for 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
