SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University men's wrestling team opened its 2021-22 home schedule with a bang on Thursday evening, defeating Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) foe Simpson University by a 31-21 score inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
It's the first home dual win against a conference opponent in the program's history.
The dual started with the 184-pound matchup, where Tyson Stover defeated Trinidad Diaz by major decision (10-1), giving Corban valuable early momentum.
Simpson's Jacob Gonsalves won the 197-pound matchup with Macoy Christman, narrowly triumphing in a 7-4 decision.
After the Warriors forfeited the heavyweight match, Simpson's Eduardo Esquivel pinned Markus Johnson at the 3:50 mark in the 125 pound face-off, helping the Red Hawks expand their advantage in the team score to 15-4.
Wesley Vasquez (133 pounds) ignited the packed home crowd in the next matchup, however, pinning Justus Haskin (4:26) to swing momentum back in favor of the Navy and Gold.
That energy continued to build when Ryan Davis won in a thriller against Gustavo Ventura in the 141-pound match. The battle went down to the very last second, as Davis earned a gritty 6-5 decision, propelled by a crucial late takedown.
The Red Hawks forfeited the 149-pound match, and then regained the lead via a Tyler Diaz pin of Yasyf Sorensen at 157 pounds.
The Warriors got those points right back, however, when David Rubio earned a dominant win by fall at 165 pounds over Jaden Madding. Coupled with a Simpson forfeit at 174, and Rubio's clutch pin sealed Corban's dual win over their conference foe.
Corban (3-1) will next be in action at home against three-time defending NJCAA National Champion Clackamas Community College on December 9. The exhibition dual is slated to begin at 7 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
