NAIA Final Site Preview: Corban Volleyball Looking to Continue Record-Setting Season

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – After an impressive victory in the NAIA Opening Round, the No. 8-ranked Corban University volleyball team will now venture to the NAIA Final Site in Sioux City, Iowa. It will be the sixth-straight final site appearance for head coach Kim McLain and the Warriors, and the team feels more than capable of reaching historic new heights on the NAIA's biggest stage.

The Warriors will compete as the No. 1 seed in Pool H, which features No. 2-seeded Bellevue University (Neb.), and No. 3-seeded Ottawa University (Ariz.).

Pool play will take place from November 30-December 1 at the Tyson Event Center, with the Navy and Gold set to tackle each of the aforementioned teams in a round robin format. The top team from each of the final site's eight pools will then advance to a single-elimination bracket, which will start on December 2 and conclude with the NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship on December 4.

The Warriors have had success in the pool play rounds as they have advanced into bracket play in four of the last five trips to the final site.

Corban is led offensively by the CCC Player of the Year Avari Ridgway and First-Team All-Conference honoree Rylee Troutman. Ridgway ranks 81st in the NAIA in kills-per-set (3.27), 64th in hitting percentage (.291), and 60th in the nation in points-per-set (3.9), while Troutman's 412 kills are the 28th-most in the NAIA, and her 495 points are the 19th-most of any NAIA player. Additionally, Troutman ranks 8th in the country in service aces with 63 on the fall campaign.

The Warriors' two-setter combination of Jadyn Mullen (All-CCC Honorable Mention) and Ciarra Judson will look to continue their stellar seasons facilitating the offensive scheme. Mullen (6.20 assists-per-set) and Judson (4.39 assists-per-set) have used their combined efforts to propel the Navy and Gold to 13.16 kills-per-set as a team.

Conference Coach of the Year Kim McLain's squad boasts the eighth-best team hitting percentage in the country at .268.

Defensively, the Warriors are led by at the net Allyson Reid (All-CCC Second-Team) who ranks 23rd nationally with 1.16 blocks-per-set and 24th nationally with 122 total blocks. Meanwhile, libero Kealani Ontai (All-CCC Honorable Mention) paces the Navy and Gold in the back row with 402 digs on the campaign. Ridgway and Troutman both serve a strong role defensively as well, as both players have tallied over 250 digs on the year.

The Warriors currently boast a 28-2 record, serving as the most for the program in a single season since the turn of the century.

Below are the breakdowns for both opponents the Warriors will face during their pool play matchups.

(#3) Ottawa University (Ariz.). - November 30, 12:30 p.m. CST

The No.-16-ranked Spirit (26-2) will look to build upon what has been the best season in program history. In just their fifth season of competition, OUAZ will be making their debut in Iowa, clinching a spot at the final site for the first time. Competing in one of the country's top conferences, the Spirit also claimed the program's first-ever GSAC Regular-Season title in 2021, establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the national stage. They are led offensively by Kate Pestova and Cristal Carrizoza. Pestova led the GSAC in kills and is ranked No. 9 nationally with 4.29 kills per set. Meanwhile, Carrizoza was named GSAC Player of the Year for her work facilitating the OUAZ offense from the setter position. Carrizoza ranks No. 25 nationally with 10.04 assists per set. Slowing down this offensive duo for the Spirit will play a huge role in the Warriors first pool play matchup.

(#2) Bellevue College (Neb.) - December 1, 3:30 p.m. CST

No. 11-ranked Bellevue (24-7) enters final site play as the No. 2 seed of the pool. After earning an at-large bid to the Opening Round, the Bruins used a sweep over Edward Waters University to punch their ticket to the final site. Bellevue is no stranger to the final site, as they have been participants at the final site in four of their last five campaigns. The Bruins use a high-powered offense—averaging 14.16 kills per set, which is good for a No. 6 rank nationally—to attack their opponents in multiple ways. They are led by Eve Fountain (3.55 K/S) and Sierra Athen (3.04 K/S) both of whom are looking to continue their stellar seasons in Iowa. The Navy and Gold will rely heavily on their defensive prowess to slow the vaunted Bruin offense.
