HELENA, Mont. – The Corban University women's basketball team dropped the final game of its trip through Big Sky country on Sunday against Carroll College (Mont.) by a final score of 78-51. On the third day of a grueling weekend in Montana, the Navy and Gold just couldn't mount the second-half comeback effort that they showcased in the first two games of the weekend.
"It was great for me personally to be back in Helena, and we got to compete against a very good Carroll team, which only makes us better." said head coach Bill Pilgeram. "Carroll was very good offensively and showed great shooting and balance. Their zone caused some problems for us as well this early in the season."
The Warriors hung around early, as the contest was tied at 17 with under eight minutes remaining in the second quarter. However, Carroll used an 18-3 run over a span of more than six minutes to pull away, taking control and never looking back. Corban shot just 32.7% from the field in the contest, while also struggling from beyond the arc, hitting just 3-of-13 attempts from the perimeter (23.1%). Meanwhile, the Saints knocked down 11-of-24 3PT shots (45.8%) and scored 27 points off Corban turnovers to carry their offensive attack.
Halle Wright led the Navy and Gold in scoring with 13 points, nine of which came from the free throw line. Wright was also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds on the afternoon.
Shaelie Burgess (10 PTS, 5-of-10 FG) and Holly Golenor (10 PTS, 5-of-9) both chipped in double-digit scoring efforts in the loss.
For the Saints, Christine Denny (20 PTS, 7-of-10 FG), Danielle Wagner (15 PTS, 5-of-9 FG), and Sienna Swannack (11 PTS, 4-of-7 FG) carried the Carroll offense in their third victory of the young season.
The Warriors return from their weekend in Montana with the first win of the year under their belt and plenty of reason for optimism moving forward in the campaign.
Corban (1-3) will head back on the road this upcoming Friday for an exhibition contest in Seattle, Wash. against Seattle Pacific University. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
