ASHLAND, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team was handed their second loss of the weekend, this time at the hands of the Southern Oregon Raiders. Southern jumped out to an eight-point advantage at the conclusion of the first half and was able to hold off several second half Warrior runs to win the contest by a final score of 75-69.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair as the two squads traded buckets through the first 15 minutes of the game. The contest was tied at 21 with just six minutes to play in the opening stanza, however the Raiders used a 16-8 run to vault themselves to an eight-point advantage at the midway point of the contest.
SOU showed their determination coming out of the half by extending their lead to as many as 13. The Raiders managed to hang onto their lead throughout the majority of the second period, however, as has been typical of the Corban squad this season, they showed grit and fight until the very end. The Warriors trailed by 11 with just 1:07 to play, but with some spirited effort on the defensive end and a handful of SOU missed free throws, Corban was able to trim the deficit to just four with seven seconds left after a Talin Lewis three-pointer. Unfortunately, the Warriors were forced to foul and their comeback bid fell short after two made free throws from the Raiders Atmar Mundu.
It was another gritty effort from the Navy and Gold, as they managed to hang around in the contest despite Southern Oregon shooting 58.3% from the floor, compared to just 38.7% for Corban. The Warriors showcased their depth with the bench chipping in 24 points. A strong effort from the free throw line also allowed the comeback attempt to form as the squad went 14-17 from the charity stripe.
Two Warriors managed to turn in double-digit scoring efforts as Jordan Newt (17 PTS, 5 STL) and Darius Henderson (16 PTS, 5 REB) showcased their talents on both ends of the floor.
SOU was paced in scoring by their two-headed attack of Atmar Mundu (23 PTS, 4 A) and Josh Meyer (20 PTS, 8 REB). Meanwhile, big man Joe Juhala (11 PTS, 8 REB) also reached the double-digit plateau for the Raiders.
Corban (6-7, 1-4 CCC) will head into the Christmas break with plenty of reason for optimism as three of the four CCC losses for the Navy and Gold have come by less than six points. Head Coach Taylor Kelly's squad will look to return to their winning ways on New Years Eve inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. Corban will host the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers with tip slated for 7:30 p.m.
