LEWISTON, Idaho – It's hard to imagine a better start to the 2021 spring campaign for the No. 13-ranked Corban University volleyball team, which sealed off a perfect 4-0 weekend with a pair of wins against (RV) Bushnell University on Saturday. Corban took the morning match in straight sets (25-21, 25-21, 27-25), before claiming the afternoon contest in four games (25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22).
"Bushnell is fast-paced and scrappy," said head coach Kim McLain. "I was proud of how the team made adjustments throughout both matches. It was great to be back playing in the tough Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC)! We look forward to getting back to work on the details of the game."
The Warriors claimed match one of the Interstate-5 battle with ease, earning their third-consecutive sweep to kick off the young season. Both the first and second sets ended with 25-21 tallies, while the third game of the match went down to the wire in a thrilling 27-25 conclusion.
Showcasing the elite talent that earned her 2019 NAIA Honorable-Mention All-American accolades, Cassie Cunningham (12 kills, .355 attack percentage) delivered the kind of performance Warrior fans have become accustomed to from the standout hitter.
Avari Ridgway notched her fourth-straight match with a double-figure kill total, registering 10 putaways in the triumph while also collecting 14 digs. The offense was fueled by 22-assist performances from Ciarra Judson and Jadyn Mullen, who combined for 44 assists as a tandem.
On the defensive end, Kealani Ontai was brilliant as the Warrior libero, totaling 32 digs.
The second match of the day started as a back-and-forth affair, as the lead switched hands numerous times in the early stages of the first set. At one point, the two squads were deadlocked at 13, but a pivotal four-point run helped the Navy and Gold grab a healthy lead that would last until the end of the set (25-21).
The Beacons would respond with a gritty victory in set two (25-17) to even the match at a game apiece, marking the first set dropped by the Warriors in 2021. That would be the only blemish of the weekend for the Navy and Gold, however, as Corban bounced back to win the next two games and cap off the doubleheader sweep of Bushnell.
Ridgway (13 kills, .220 attack percentage, 22 digs), Cunningham (11 kills), and Ally Tow (10 kills) were at the center of the offensive action, while Ontai (28 digs) delivered yet another impressive effort on the other side of the ball.
Cora Furman was a constant disruption for the Beacon attack, compiling an incredible 11 blocks in the match-two victory. That mark is just one away from matching the program's single game record.
Meanwhile, Judson (19 assists), Raedyn Goudreau (13 assists), and Mullen (12 assists) facilitated the offense.
Corban (4-0 CCC) will now begin preparation for its next trip to Lewiston, which is slated to take place on March 5-6. In the next tournament, the Warriors will face off with Multnomah University (0-4) and Oregon Tech (2-2).
