SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University beach volleyball team hosted its first-ever pairs tournament over the weekend, playing host to three NCAA Division I foes on the Corban Beach Volleyball Courts.
University of Washington, Boise State University, and University of Portland all came to the City on a Hill to battle it out. Saturday's portion of the tournament consisted of pool play for seeding purposes, while Sunday's action divided up the pairs in bronze, silver, and gold brackets.
"This was a tough weekend, and we will take away many lessons," said head coach Diana Villalpando. "Ultimately, we saw what top Division I schools in the Northwest look like. We have to put in the work in practice, because we see them again in a few weeks."
Tyra Ching and Tessa McFetridge won the bronze bracket in today's tournament play, serving as a bright spot for the Navy and Gold.
A trio of Warrior pairs—Melanie Miller/Lauren Condon, Kaitlin Hunter/Briana Ayala, and Kalisi Latu/Nicole Bantilan—competed in the silver bracket on Sunday, though none were able to advance past the quarterfinals.
University of Washington's Shayne McPherson/Chloe Loreen took home the title in the gold bracket, while Boise State's Kylee Johnson/Ellie McDonald championed the silver bracket.
The Warriors (0-1) will look to learn from the weekend's competition as they continue their rigorous schedule against NCAA Division I adversaries. The squad's next action will be on Tuesday, when it travels to Eugene to challenge the Ducks in the Navy and Gold's lone road dual of the season.
