LA GRANDE, Ore. – Corban's women's basketball team fell in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) action to the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon University, 92-58, Friday afternoon inside Quinn Coliseum.
"We didn't play like the team we want to be tonight," said head coach
Bill Pilgeram. "Luckily, we have the opportunity to bounce back and be ready to compete tomorrow."
With today's loss, Corban falls to 7-5 overall and 4-5 in CCC games. Meanwhile, Eastern Oregon improves to 13-4 overall and 7-2 in conference contests.
The Navy and Gold were led in scoring by the trio of sophomore
Halle Wright, junior
Holly Golenor, and junior
Shaelie Burgess, who all registered double figures with 12, 12, and 10 points, respectively. Wright and Burgess also led Corban in rebounds with eight and seven, respectively, while Wright and freshman
Josslyn Ames handed out a team-leading three assists each.
In the opening six minutes of the game, Eastern Oregon quickly jumped out to a 17-5 lead before extending it to as much as 14 points (23-9) with 1:23 left. Corban would break into double digits with the final basket of the quarter when Golenor connected on a bucket in the paint to close out the opening period down 23-11.
The second quarter began with Corban scoring the first five points to cut EOU's lead to single digits (23-16) on a three-pointer by senior
Gracie McCoy just over two minutes into the period. Unfortunately, Eastern Oregon answered the Navy and Gold's early scoring with an 11-2 run to push its lead to 16 points (34-18) with 4:49 left in the first half. The host Mountaineers would close the first half by equaling their largest lead of the game, as Eastern Oregon took a 41-25 lead into halftime.
Over the opening three minutes of the third quarter, Eastern Oregon continued to apply the pressure growing its lead to 27 points (54-27) with exactly seven minutes on the clock. The rest of the third quarter did not change the score much, as Corban watched the Mountaineers' lead balloon to 34 points (69-35) heading into the fourth period.
Eastern Oregon's lead grew to a game-high 38 points (75-37) in the opening minute of the fourth quarter before Corban began to chip away at the host team's lead. The Navy and Gold pulled within 30 points (83-53) on a Wright basket with 4:23 left in the game. That would be as close as the visiting Warriors would get, as EOU registered the wire-to-wire win.
Eastern Oregon was led offensively by six different Mountaineers that each scored in double figures led by Taylor Stricklin's game-high 17 points. Beverly Slater, Adyson Harris, Leilani Padilla, Jullian Albright, and Brandy Smith added to the offense with 13, 13, 11, 11, and 10 points, respectively. Slater also led EOU with a game-high nine rebounds, while Slater, Padilla, and Sailor Liefke handed out a game-high six assists each for the Mountaineers.
On the night, Corban combined to shoot 25-for-65 (38.5%) from the field, while also knocking down 3-of-19 (15.8%) from beyond the three-point line and were 5-for-6 (83.3%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Eastern Oregon was a combined 36-for-71 (50.7%) from the field that included a 54.3% (19-for-35) clip in the second half, 16-for-34 (47.1%) from long distance, and 4-for-6 (66.7%) at the charity stripe.
These same two teams will close out the conference weekend tomorrow – Saturday, April 24 – beginning at 1:00 p.m. inside Quinn Coliseum in La Grande. Tomorrow's contest will conclude the regular season for Corban, while Eastern Oregon will finish the conference portion of its schedule before hosting Pacific University of Oregon next weekend.
