KEIZER, Ore. – On Saturday morning in Keizer, Ore., the Corban University baseball team lit up the scoreboard against CalPac opponent Simpson University, scoring 27 runs over 12 innings of play. The Navy and Gold caused the ten-run rule to go into effect in both games, winning 15-3 in seven innings in game one, and 12-0 in five innings in game two.
"I am happy with the way the boys competed today," said head coach
Derek Legg. "They really did a good job of controlling the momentum all day, as well as in all three facets of the game. We look forward to getting out on the field tomorrow for senior day."
In game one, the Warriors busted out the bats in the third inning, as
Morgan Hostetler drilled a three-run triple over the head of the center fielder Sahid Abdalah. The Navy and Gold would add a fourth run in the frame, as Hostetler subsequently crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Corban tacked on in the fourth, as they received an RBI double from
Dakota Fingar to extend their lead to five over the Red Hawks. Following the double,
Justin Tow hit a single through the left side which squirted under the glove of left fielder Logan Gomes to allow Fingar to score from second base. The lead was 6-0 entering the fifth.
The Navy and Gold continued their streak of three innings in a row with a run scored in the fifth, as they tallied their seventh run of the game on a sacrifice fly by
Ezequiel Pestana to center field, scoring
Reese Fawley.
Simpson tallied their first run in the sixth inning, as Warrior starter
Mason Shaw was brilliant for 5.1 innings on the mound. He walked Connor Wytko with the bases loaded to push across the first run of the battle for the Red Hawks. Shaw was then relieved by
Jacob Bowser, who allowed a sacrifice fly on the first pitch he threw to Andre Alvarez, making the score 7-2 Warriors.
The Navy and Gold would add five runs in the bottom of the sixth, as they plated four of those on a grand slam homer from
Chris Grayson, which put the Warriors ahead by a 12-2 score after six full innings of play.
The Red Hawks added a run in the top of the seventh, but Corban struck again with a three-run bomb to left field down the line by
Dakota Fingar, which served as a walk-off homer as it ended the bout in a 15-3 final score.
Mason Shaw earned his first victory of the year (1-4) in the day's first game, as he outdueled Simpson starter Buddy Cervantes, who lasted just three innings.
Game two began with some miscues from the Red Hawks, as two errors were committed and two walks were issued by Simpson starter Connor Caporale, which led to five Warrior runs. The first two tallies scored on errors, and the final three came home on a bases-clearing double by Grayson for the only hit recorded in the frame.
Corban added even more offense in the second, when the Navy and Gold bashed back-to-back homers off of reliever Connor Wytko.
Nate Cantonwine started the scoring in the inning by demolishing a two-run shot over the right field fence, and Fingar followed that up with a solo bomb on a liner to left. The score was 8-0 after two.
Aidan Bunn would drive an RBI double down the left field line, before another three-run triple for the Warriors occurred, as they continued to pour it on. Tow drilled a high line drive into right-center field to clear the bases, making it 12-0 Corban after three.
The rest of the game was quiet, as the game went just the minimum five innings. Corban invoked the run rule by going up by more than ten runs. The second game of the day lasted just one hour and 39 minutes, sending the Warriors home happy with a sweep on the first day of doubleheaders against the Simpson Red Hawks.
Nate Martin earned another win on the mound for the Warriors, as he went the full five innings and pushed his season record to 4-5, as his counterpart Connor Caporale fell to 1-2 on the campaign.
The Navy and Gold had four total homers on the day, two from Fingar, one from Cantonwine, and the grand slam from Grayson.
Corban (17-25, 14-14 CCC) will head back to the friendly confines of Volcanoes Stadium tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. against Simpson for the final home twin-billing of the year. In addition, the Warriors will be honoring their senior contributors to the squad in a ceremony on the field.
