Corban Baseball Celebrates Senior Day with Series Sweep of Simpson

KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team pushed its win streak to eight games on Sunday, sweeping the series against Simpson University with a pair of routs at Volcanoes Stadium. The Warriors took game one by a 10-2 final score, and sealed the four-game sweep with a 7-2 victory in the back half of the twin bill.

"That was a good weekend for the Warriors," said head coach Derek Legg. "I thought we competed well in every area. Now we have a big week of practice before a big series to finish conference play."

Prior to the start of today's doubleheader, the Navy and Gold recognized six players—Jimmy McGovern, Jacob Asa, Cole Foley, Nate Cantonwine, Jackson Arnsdorf, and Justin Tow—who played in the final home games of their Warrior careers on Sunday.

The Warrior offense didn't miss a beat after yesterday's two lopsided triumphs, picking up right where it left off in game one today.

A two-run single from Tow got the offense started quickly in game one, as the Warriors handed an early advantage to Arnsdorf to work with on the mound. The squad hung up two more in the following inning, as Chris Grayson blasted a two-run moonshot off the scoreboard in left-center to push the lead to four.

On the hill, Arnsdorf was sharp early on, striking out seven Red Hawks through a scoreless first-four frames. Simpson plated a pair of unearned runs against him in the fifth, but that would be the only blemish on an otherwise strong start, which ended up resulting in senior hurler's second win (5 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 7 K) of the season.

Asa took the ball from him in relief, twirling three strong frames (3 IP, 0 R, 3 K) out of the bullpen to preserve the Warrior lead. McGovern then handled the duties in the ninth, recording the final three outs of the contest in his first appearance of the 2021 season.

The Navy and Gold offense blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs to open the floodgates. Reese Fawley got things started, blasting a two-run shot over the high fence in left field for his fifth long ball of the season.

Later in the stanza, Dakota Fingar dunked a pop fly into left field to plate two more, stretching the Warrior lead to 8-2.

Corban would score a run in each of the next two innings, as well, as Grayson drove in another with a run-scoring double in the seventh, and Foley roped the first homer of his collegiate career in the eighth to round out the Warriors' game-one scoring.

Grayson has been a run-producing machine since making his season debut in the middle of march, driving in 19 runs in his first 39 at-bats.

While the previous three games of the series were characterized by big innings for the Navy and Gold, the Warriors were forced to get creative offensively in the finale, manufacturing runs with small ball and situational hitting for the majority of the contest.

Morgan Hostetler hooked an RBI single through the right side of the infield in the first inning of game two, propelling Corban in front. That would be the first of four-consecutive innings in which the squad scored a lone run.

Corban manufactured another run in the second, kick-started by a one-out walk drawn by Keenan O'Brien. Jack Ossenkop courtesy ran for the Warrior backstop, and promptly stole both second and third base.

Ezequiel Pestana then laid down a perfectly placed squeeze bunt, scoring Ossenkop to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

Simpson struck for a pair of runs in the top of the third to tie the game, but the Warrior offense reclaimed the lead with a run in the bottom half.

Corban then tacked on a run to its advantage in the fourth—when O'Brien launched his first career home run to left—and added two more runs of cushion in the next inning.

Blasting the ninth home run of the weekend, Zack Simon put an exclamation mark on the Warriors' impressive offensive series in the bottom of the sixth, going to the opposite field for his second homer of the 2021 campaign.

Trevor Sczcepanek—who shined in two and two-thirds of scoreless relief in the seven-inning series finale—earned the victory on the mound for the Warriors, who have now swept two-straight series.

Corban (19-25, 14-14 CCC) will close out its regular-season slate next weekend, facing off with in-state rival Oregon Tech in a sneak peak of a matchup that will occur again in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament. Both the Warriors and the Owls have clinched their places in the CCC Championships, joining conference Regular-Season Champion Lewis-Clark State College as the three teams that will vie for the first-ever CCC Tournament Title.

First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader down in Klamath Falls is slated for 12 p.m., and Sunday's action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
