Corban Softball Claims Pair of Wins against EOU on Day Two

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University softball team earned a valuable Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) series win on Saturday, claiming each of its matchups against Eastern Oregon University. The Warriors took game one with ease (9-1, six innings), before edging the Mountaineers (7-5) in the non-conference finale.

The ball was flying early at Warrior Field, as a pair of long balls—one from each squad—accounted for the early scoring in game one.

Eastern Oregon's Jordan Henley got the visitors on the board in the first, lacing an opposite-field solo shot to right-center.

In the next inning, Warrior rookie Tatiana Liu continued her impressive series, blasting a two-run no-doubter to left field to put Corban on top, 2-1. The blast marked her second-straight day with a roundtripper.

Corban tacked on two more in the fourth, plating runs on an RBI single up the middle from Makiah Johnson and a wild play involving a bunt single from Kaylee Buhrkuhl. The senior shortstop dropped down a beauty in front of home plate, racing to first to beat the throw from the catcher. In turn, Samantha Martinez delivered some heads-up baserunning, starting at second base and racing all the way home on the throw.

Martinez played an integral role in the squad's next two runs, as well, dunking a two-run double down the left-field line in the fifth to push the lead to five.

The floodgates opened in the sixth, when sloppy defense and pitching from the Mountaineers led to a trio of Warrior runs. An EOU error plated Corban's seventh run, before a pair of bases-loaded walks pushed the deficit to eight and invoked the run rule.

Ally Crakes was once again exceptional in the circle for the Navy and Gold, building off her complete game in game two yesterday by going the distance again in Saturday's first contest. Crakes settled in nicely after the early homer by Henley, allowing just four hits in total and striking out four.

In game two, the Warriors quickly hung up a three spot to jump out ahead. With the bases loaded and two outs in the first, Paia'ala Wilcox-Molina lined a single to left that was mishandled by EOU left fielder Rhyanne Oates and ended up clearing the bases.

The Mountaineers got one of those back in the next half inning, but the Warriors pushed the lead back to three in the bottom of the second, when Tabby Humphrey crossed on a wild pitch.

After Warrior starter Kaylee Brown started in the circle and left the game after two innings of work, freshman Tatiana Liu made her first appearance of the season in relief. In her first career inning of work, Olivia Zufelt greeted her with two-run single to bring EOU within one in the top of the third. Liu would do well to settle in and limit the damage, holding the Mountaineers scoreless in each of the next two stanzas.

Buhrkuhl helped the hometown squad get some breathing room with an RBI triple in the fourth, making it a 5-3 ballgame. A sixth-inning solo blast from Kayla Berg brought the visitors within one yet again, as the pesky Mountaineers refused to go quietly in the finale.

Johnson—who is hitting .622 in her last 10 games—collected yet another RBI knock in a two-run sixth for the Navy and Gold, while a savvy baserunning play from Humphrey rounded out the squad's scoring.

While EOU stuck around for the entirety of the contest, the early deficit would prove too much to overcome, as Sarah Probasco closed out the contest en route to the save. Liu was credited with the victory, the first of her collegiate career.

Corban (19-11, 12-3 CCC) will hit the road for a four-game series against No. 25-ranked College of Idaho next weekend. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader will take place at 2 p.m. MT, while Saturday's action will kick off at 11 a.m. MT.
