Corban Softball Struggles Offensively in Doubleheader Losses to No. 23 Yotes

CALDWELL, Idaho. – In a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) twin-billing on Saturday, the Corban University softball team failed to mount any offensive attack against the College of Idaho in Caldwell. The Navy and Gold dropped both contests, allowing 16 runs and plating just a single tally over the 12 innings played. The Warriors dropped game one 8-0 in five innings, and fell by a similar 8-1 margin the day's second game.

In the first game, the Coyotes struck for four runs in the bottom half of the second inning to vault themselves ahead of the visiting Warriors. College of Idaho benefitted from three Corban miscues in the frame, which led to two runs, and were complemented by two RBI singles by the Yotes.

College of Idaho increased their advantage in the fourth, when they tacked on with an RBI hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly.

The Coyotes added their final two tallies in the bottom of the fifth in walk-off fashion when Aleah Mendiola blasted a two-run shot to right field which put a seal on the game.

The Warriors were able to muster up just a single hit in the contest off the bat of Sophia Barbosa, while the Yotes registered just six hits.

Game two followed an eerily similar pattern, as the Yotes again had a huge second inning, scoring five times to begin the game. Two RBI hit-by-pitches and an RBI single accounted for the first three runs of the stanza, while the last two occurred on a fielder's choice and an error.

Then, in the third, the College of Idaho added their last three runs of the battle. An RBI single from Mendiola and a two-run homer by Haley Loffer made it an 8-0 game in the third inning.

Corban would put their only run of the day on the board in the fifth inning on a run-scoring base-knock by Christine Warren.

In another difficult game for Warrior hitters, only four Corban hits were tallied, while College of Idaho matched their six-hit game one performance with another six-hit game in the back half.

Defense was less of an issue for the Warriors in game two, but the Navy and Gold pitching staff was unable to limit catastrophic damage in the second and third innings.

Corban (19-13, 12-5 CCC) will look to bounce back on Saturday with another twin-billing set to be played against C of I. The first of the two contests will be a CCC affair, and the second will be a non-conference battle. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. (MT).
