SALEM, Ore. – The 2019-20 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Champion Bushnell Beacons stormed out of the gates against the Corban University women's basketball team in Friday evening's Interstate-5 clash. Bushnell would cruise to a comfortable 84-60 victory over the Warriors, led by the squad's dynamic duo of Morgan McKinney (20 points, five rebounds) and Aspen Slifka (19 points).
"I don't think we were ready for the ball pressure and execution that Bushnell brought to the table tonight," said Warrior head coach Bill Pilgeram. "They are the defending conference champions for a reason. We will regroup, adjust, and be ready for another chance tomorrow."
Bushnell shot a blistering 61.1% clip from the floor in the first 10 minutes to jump out to an early lead, claiming a 27-18 advantage after the first quarter. The squad then expanded on that with 25 more points in the second period, having their way against the Warrior defense.
Corban made some valuable defensive adjustments coming out of the locker room, limiting the high-powered Beacon offense to just 16 points in both the third and fourth quarters. It wouldn't be enough to overcome the early deficit, however, as Bushnell handedly took game one of the two-game weekend rivalry series.
McKinney—the 2019-20 CCC Player of the Year—turned in a typically excellent performance, shooting 8-of-16 from the field in the triumph. Meanwhile, Slifka—the 2019-20 CCC Freshman of the Year—continued her torrid 2020-21 campaign. Entering today's action averaging over 14 points-per-game, she showcased just how dangerous she could be on the hardwood.
Also ending in double figures, Kaylen Kamelamela tallied 15 for the visiting squad.
Four Warriors ended the night with double-digit scoring efforts, as Holly Golenor (15 points, six rebounds) led the pack. Shaelie Burgess (11 points, eight rebounds) finished a couple boards shy of a double-double, while Halle Wright and Gemma LaVerge each tallied 10 points.
Corban (4-3, 2-3 CCC) and Bushnell (5-2, 4-1 CCC) will be back in action tomorrow, this time at 5:30 p.m. inside of the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. The Beacons are looking to continue their win streak, which currently sits at four, while the Navy and Gold is looking to bounce back and salvage a series split.
