Suetsugu and Pires Lead Corban Women’s Soccer to 2-0 Victory at SOU

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team dealt Southern Oregon University its first home loss of the 2021 spring campaign on Monday afternoon, downing the Raiders by a 2-0 final score.

"We started out slower than I would've liked," said interim head coach Tim Kagey. "Once we found our rhythm, we began to consistently find what we wanted."

Even though the two teams played to a scoreless first half, the Navy and Gold was in control from the first whistle, dominating possession throughout the first 45 minutes and limiting the hometown squad to just one shot during that time. It felt as if it was just a matter of time before the Warriors broke through.

That moment came in the 53rd minute, when the Navy and Gold caught a fortunate break; a SOU handball just inches outside of the box led to a free kick for the Warriors. Mei Suetsugu took the free kick and placed it perfectly, blasting it to the right-side netting for her fifth goal of the season.

That score tied her for the team lead in goals for the season, but just over 10 minutes later (64'), Juliana Pires took that title right back, breaking through the Raider back line and sneaking one past SOU goalkeeper Jessie Selby to expand the lead to two. It was her sixth goal of the year.

Corban cruised to the victory from there, as Devan Archer notched the shutout in goal, collecting four saves along the way. Her top save came in the 79th minute, when Kiani Pandoliano launched a free kick on frame that Archer sprawled out to save at full extension.

The Warriors (8-2 overall) move to 8-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play on the 2021 spring season, and will keep tabs on Oregon Tech's results on the road against Northwest this week. Corban and OIT are currently tied atop the CCC West Division standings, with the top-squad earning an automatic berth to the NAIA Tournament.

Corban and Southern Oregon will be back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m. in the final regular-season match of the season for the two squads.
