KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – On the final day of the 2021 regular season, the Corban University baseball team fell in both of Sunday's contests against Oregon Tech.
The Owls rode a strong pitching performance to a 5-1 victory in game one to halt the Navy and Gold's 10-game winning streak. In a thrilling series finale, an incredible Warrior comeback attempt fell just short, as OIT walked off with a 12-11 triumph to earn a series split.
Trask Telesmanich (6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 7 K) and Jesse Dunham (3 IP, 0 H, 3 K) combined to limit the Warrior offense to just one run in Sunday's first contest. Corban's only run of the game came in the top of the fifth, courtesy of a solo shot from Morgan Hostetler, but that would be the only offense the squad could muster in the defeat.
All of Tech's scoring also came in the fifth, as a three-run bomb from Dalton Daily was the biggest swing of a five-run rally for the hometown team, which proved to be more than enough run support for Telasmanich and Dunham.
Hostetler (2-for-3) and Dakota Fingar (2-for-3) accounted for all four of Corban's hits in the contest.
The Warriors got off to a much stronger start in game two of the day, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Aidan Bunn led off the contest with a single, and used his speed to come around to score on a base hit from the next man up, Nate Cantonwine—a ball that was mishandled by Owl right fielder Kaleb Keelean. Cantonwine then came home on an RBI single from Reese Fawley.
Oregon Tech got those runs right back in its half of the inning, but a bases-loaded walk from Bunn in the top of the second put Corban back in front.
That lead would last until the bottom of the fourth, when a two-run homer from Ian Peters gave the Owls a 4-3 advantage. The OIT offense extended the squad's lead with three runs in the sixth and four in the bottom of the eighth, leading 11-4 as Corban came to the plate in the top of the ninth.
It appeared as if the Owls would cruise to the doubleheader sweep, but the resilient Warriors had a different plan in mind. Corban mounted an incredible seven-run rally to even the score at 11, and four of the seven runs came with two outs in the inning.
Cole Foley, Tyler Covalt, Estenio Sede, Chris Grayson, and Hostetler all collected RBI knocks in the unbelievable frame.
Oregon Tech mustered some magic of its own in the bottom of the ninth, however, as a pinch-hit, walk-off single from David Palmer scored Brody Connell to conclude a wild series finale. It was the first RBI of the year for Palmer.
All but one member of the Warrior lineup registered a knock in the defeat, while Bunn (2-for-4), Hostetler (2-for-3), and Foley (2-for-4) all collected a pair of hits.
Hostetler finished the weekend with an impressive four-game performance at the dish, going a combined 10-for-14, while notching multi-hit efforts in all four contests and tallying an RBI in each battle.
With the two wins today, Oregon Tech (23-23, 18-14 CCC) clinches the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Championships, presented by U.S. Bank. Meanwhile, Corban (21-27, 16-16 CCC) will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed.
The two squads will play each other to begin next weekend's action, which will be hosted in Lewiston, Idaho by top-seeded Lewis-Clark State College.
First pitch between the Warriors and Owls is slated for 10 a.m. at Harris Field on Saturday, May 8, and then each team will go on to play No. 5-ranked LCSC later in the day.
At the conclusion of the round-robin play, the top-two teams from the three-team field will advance to the inaugural CCC Tournament Championship, which is slated to take place on Sunday, May 9.
