COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The Corban University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in an 85-59 triumph on the road against Walla Walla University on Saturday evening, capping off a pivotal Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) weekend road sweep.
"I am so proud of our team's ability to live out our defensive identity," said head coach Taylor Kelly. "At the beginning of the season we made the purpose of this season to be a resilient brotherhood. I believe our guys are living out our collective purpose and it has allowed us to start to find some resiliency to overcome some early season letdowns. I'm thankful for our guys' commitment to one another and the ability they've shown to stay together."
Corban wasted no time getting started on Saturday evening, taking a double-digit lead less than seven minutes into the contest and never looking back from there.
Ten different Warriors sank a bucket and eight members of the roster accounted for at least six points in the balanced team effort.
"We had a great, balanced offensive effort all weekend, and tonight was spearheaded by Darius Henderson being a monster in the paint," Kelly stated.
Henderson went 7-for-11 from the field en route to a team-high 17 points, while also gobbling up five boards. The team leader in rebounds was Denis Kirichenko, who ended the night with six rebounds, while also contributing 11 points off the bench.
The Warriors dominated down low, nearly doubling the Wolves' scoring output in the paint (38-20) thanks to impressive showings from Henderson and Kirichenko.
Also impressive in reserve, Talin Lewis rode a torrid second half to a 12-point, four-rebound performance in Saturday's victory. Lewis did all of his damage after the break, reaching double figures for the third time this season and second time in the past three games.
Mateo Escheik rounded out Corban's double-digit scorers, dropping 11 points (5-of-8 FG) and notching five rebounds.
As a team, Corban shot 45.1% from the field, and 36.4% from beyond the arc.
Walla Walla was spearheaded by Zayne Browning, who ended the night with a game-high 22 points in the defeat. KiAndre Gaddy led all performers with 12 rebounds, while also adding seven points.
Gaddy entered tonight's contest ranking third in the CCC in scoring, averaging 18.6 points-per-game, and the Warriors managed to hold him to single digits for the first time this season.
"Gaddy is a really good player and we held him in check all night," Kelly added. "Our guys were dialed in on their jobs and executed them for the entire weekend."
The Warriors (12-8, 7-5 CCC) will be back in front of their home crowd next weekend, hosting Multnomah University on Friday (7:30 p.m.) and Warner Pacific University on Saturday (5 p.m.) inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. The squad is playing some of its best basketball of the year and is eager to get in front of its home faithful again.
Speaking on the return home, Kelly said: "Warrior Nation, we are excited to have you back on campus and we can't wait to represent you well next weekend in a home game."
