LA GRANDE, Ore. - Despite keeping the contest close in the final three quarters, the Corban University women's basketball team fell short against the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers on Saturday evening, 73-61.
The Warriors got off to a slow start scoring nine points in the first quarter, but Corban capitalized on Mountie fouls and contributed eight points on free throws in the second quarter, making their second period tally, 18. The third quarter found the Warriors trailing by only four, and then in the final period, the Navy and Gold shooters caught fire, scoring 20 points on a remarkable 75% shooting percentage.
Head coach Bill Pilgeram said, "After getting down early, I thought we competed well and stayed within reach the entire game. this group is really coming together and playing some very good basketball in stretches. As we get a little healthier, this is a team no one will want to play."
Senior guard Gracie McCoy was a significant contributor for the Navy and Gold. The veteran recorded four assists and seven rebounds, and two steals to fuel the Warriors on both ends of the court.
Holly Golenor picked up right where she left off, leading the way for the Warriors offensively with 20 points in 21 minutes, while Gemma LaVergne added 16 points, and nine boards on the night.
Taylor Stricklin added another double-double to her season tally and Adyson Harris and Sydney Zeiler contributed to the Mountie offense.
The Warriors (4-19, 3-13) return to the court next weekend in Salem to face Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon on Friday and Saturday.
