Warrior Women’s Soccer Blows by Knights for Weekend Shutout Sweep

PORTLAND, Ore. – Back-to-back shutouts of the Portland-centered Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) schools improved an already undefeated conference slate for the Corban University Women's Soccer team (6-1-3, 2-0-3), winning a 4-0 contest today at the Eastside Timbers Sports Complex against the Warner Pacific University Knights (4-6-1, 1-4-0).

"It was great to see the team score some fantastic goals today," Warriors' Head Coach Whitney Pitalo shared following her team's victory. "It was a full team effort this weekend, and we're happy to take home the six points."

Despite being held scoreless at halftime, the Warriors remained persistent on the offensive end, recording five shots in the first half to lead both squads. After holding Corban scoreless for 63 minutes of play, a late game disqualification left the Knights hindered in the backfield, and immediately paid the price not even a minute later.

In the 64th minute, sophomore forward Alysia Alvarado struck with the golden touch from outside the penalty box, connecting at the top of the goal to provide the Warriors with a 1-0 lead.

Corban would cake on the points from there, as junior forward Fatima Jimenez scored her first goal of the season, excluding exhibitions, by dribbling near side of the field to the scorer's table towards the goal and letting a shot rip past the diving attempt of Knights' goalkeeper Kate Pomerinke.

Sophomore midfielder/forward Shayla Hatfield added her first score of the year in the 76th minute, beating Pomerinke to the ball and pushing it under her gloves for the third goal of the afternoon for Corban.

The fourth and final goal was scored by a deflected shot in the penalty box, which provided junior midfielder Moe Sato with the opportunity to rocket yet another ball into the back of Warner Pacific's net.

Corban dominated in basically every aspect of the game in the second half, most impressively finishing with eight corner kick opportunities and holding the Knights to none. They also held the slight foul advantage at 4-7.

Warriors' junior goalkeeper Makida Herbert (6-1-3) recorded her fourth straight shutout to end the weekend, nabbing three saves in the process to keep the Knights at bay.

The Warriors continue their road trip next weekend, as they head across the northern border into Washington for Friday and Saturday early afternoon matchups with The Evergreen State College and Northwest University, respectively, with both matches starting at 12:30pm PDT.
