Corban Softball Splits with Menlo on Day Two in California

ATHERTON, Calif. – The Corban University softball team earned a game one win on Sunday after grabbing an early lead against Menlo College. The Warriors were unable to pull off a game two win despite 10 hits, and six Menlo miscues.

The top of the first was a big one for the Warriors. Taylor Beasley, the senior lead-off, started things off with a 3-2 single through the left side. Karla Caldron followed up with a single to the shortstop, advancing Beasley to second.

Both runners then stole putting two in scoring position for Maddie Ogles. She answered with an RBI single before Madison Wyllie tripled to right center, scoring both Calderon and Ogles. Tatiana Liu hit a sacrifice groundout to Menlo's second baseman, Alyssa Valdez, scoring Wyllie.

In the second inning, Menlo put in reliever Morgan Thomason to stop the bleeding. She struck out four and allowed only three hits in her six innings pitched. The Warriors were able to push another run across later in the game making the final score, 5-1 in favor of Corban.

Holly Gonzales threw a gem for the Navy and Gold, earning her second win of the season in complete game fashion. In addition to her four strikeouts, the southpaw allowed only five hits, and one earned run in her seven innings in the circle.

Pacing the offense was Ogles who has been a picture of consistency for the Navy and Gold. In game one, she and Morgan Gleeson were the only Warriors with multi-hit games. Ogles and Wyllie each had two RBIs.

The writing was on the wall in game two after Corban allowed four hits, three walks, two stolen bases, and an error that resulted in 6 runs scored for the home squad.

Despite their best efforts, including a two-run homerun from Ogles in the fifth, and multi-hit performances from Beasley, Wyllie, and Kaycee Arase, the Warriors were unable to put their offense and defense together to pull off a game two victory.

Corban (4-6) will be back in action tomorrow in Redding, California as they wrap up their road trip with a double header at Simpson University. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
