Strong First Half Lifts Corban Men’s Basketball to 64-55 Win over Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Corban University men's basketball team trailed for a total of just 38 seconds of the squad's 64-55 road win against The Evergreen State College on Friday evening. The Warriors built up an 18-point lead at the midway point to put the game out of reach early, and the win now puts the Navy and Gold in a three-way tie for third place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) standings with just one game left in the regular season.

"It feels good to get road wins at this time of the year, and it's awesome to be playing meaningful games," head coach Taylor Kelly said after the win. "We had some really good spurts of basketball in the first half. In the second half, we struggled to score and were too loose with the ball. We found a way to get it done and we are looking forward to playing for a home playoff game in front of Warrior Nation!"

Tied at 11 with 12:50 remaining in the first half, Corban out-scored the Geoducks 22-6 over the next ten minutes, which ended up serving as the difference-maker in Friday's triumph. The hometown team mounted a comeback in the second half, but the first-half deficit would prove to be too much in the end.

Kendall Moore led the Warriors in scoring, tallying 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Mateo Escheik was the only other member of the team to reach double figures, chipping in 10 points.

Notching his second-straight game with at least 10 boards, Psalm Maduakor led all performers with 13 rebounds, while also adding nine points to finish just one point shy of a double-double.

In the paint, Denis Kirichenko (8 PTS, 4 REB), Mauricio Smith (9 PTS, 5 REB), and Darius Henderson (8 PTS, 8 REB) led the charge for Kelly and company.

The Geoducks were paced by Mitch Wetmore (20 PTS), LaBrandon Price (16 PTS), and Austin Curry (15 PTS), who accounted for all but four of Evergreen's 55 points.

With Corban (18-11, 13-8 CCC), Southern Oregon, and Lewis-Clark State all possessing a 13-8 conference record heading into tomorrow's regular-season finale, all three teams are currently tied for third place in the CCC standings. Tomorrow's results will determine the seeding for the upcoming CCC Tournament, with the grouping's top-four seeds all earning a chance to host a quarterfinal matchup on their home courts.
