Boxers Edge Corban Women’s Lacrosse in Season-Opening Thriller

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's lacrosse team experienced a piece of history on Saturday afternoon, hosting NCAA Division III Pacific University in the program's first-ever home game, hosted on Corban's campus. The Boxers played spoiler on the day of celebration, edging the Navy and Gold in a tense 11-10 contest.

"It was a joy to play together for the first time on our own home turf," head coach Kylie McMinn said after the game. "I thought we did as well as we could with the cards we were dealt—not having two of our strongest players and captains on the field, working through multiple injuries, and playing multiple players out of position. I'm very proud of the team and how we composed ourselves."

Corban got off to a promising start, ending the first quarter with a 4-1 advantage. The second period was a low-scoring affair, but a goal with one second left until the half from Pacific's Hyland Cullen-Musengo helped the visitors draw within one at the midway point.

It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the third quarter, as the two squads matched each other goal-for-goal while vying for an advantage. Pacific gained some breathing room in the fourth stanza, however, rattling off three-straight to break an 8-8 deadlock and move ahead 11-8.

The Warriors mounted a late comeback, with Devyn Davis and Sydney Davis each slotting one in to pull the Navy and Gold within one in the final six minutes, but the visitors would be able to stave off Corban's comeback bid in the waning moments, holding onto the nail-biting triumph.

Musengo-Cullen finished with a game-high seven tallies for the boxers, while Vivian Mai also collected a pair of scores.

For the Warriors, their 2021 leading scorer (S. Davis) was at it again on Saturday, leading the squad with a hat trick. Megan Lia and Meredith Pinkerton each registered a brace in the tough loss, as well.

Josie Brence scored the first goal of her Warrior career, while defender Devyn Davis also added to the Navy and Gold's team tally. Meanwhile, the first-ever home goal in program history came from Geneen Impreso less than a minute into the contest, opening the scoring of Saturday's game with a historic moment.

Corban (0-1) will now hit the road for three-straight away contests, starting with duels against NCAA Division III Whitman College and Whitworth University on February 25-26.
