Navy and Gold Softball Takes Two from Carroll on Day One

HELENA, Mont. - Despite the chill in the air, the bats of the Corban University softball team were on fire on day one of the squad's road trip to the Big Sky Country. Alise Olson and Holly Gonzales threw a pair of gems to compliment the fiery Warrior offense.

Head coach Danyelle Huber commented, "Today was a full team effort to start conference with two wins against Carroll. The battery for both games really showed up and showed out. Clutch hits and home runs were strung together at the right time. The Warriors took advantage of their opportunities today."

Batting a .342 with 13 hits, Karla Calderon has been a difference-maker for the Warriors so far this season. The senior, having just hit a single of her own, started the scoring for Corban in the top of the first on a bunt single from Maddie Ogles.

Carroll's Kaitlynn Ayres answered right back with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Jessica Nimmo.

A Reagan Davis homerun in the fourth frame drove in Ogles and Paia'ala Wilcox-Molina to make the score 4-1 in favor of Corban. Carroll answered right back with a solo-homer from Ayers. The next three innings were quiet and the Warriors took game one, 4-2.

Taking advantage of the momentum from the first game, Taylor Beasley hit a solo shot to left center to put the Warriors on the board early.

The Fighting Saints battled to shut down Corban's offense, but in the fourth Kaycee Arase sent a homerun ball to deep left field to put the Navy and Gold up 2-0. Carroll starter Abby Hanley was relieved by Josie Barker in the top of the fifth.

In the sixth stanza, Christine Warren, who was pinch hitting for Wilcox, layed down a bunt single that brought up Arase. The junior singled down the left-field line, bringing up Davis. The freshman slugger singled to left scoring Wilcox-Molina from second. Then Meri McElligot added to the scoring tally by doubling to right-center scoring Arase and Davis.

Still in the sixth, Morgan Gleeson singled up the middle, before Logann Walker advanced her to second on a groundout to third base. A single from Beasley moved Gleeson to third and Calderon batted in Corban's final run of the day with a single to left. The Warriors took game two, 6-1.

Olson (1K, 6BB) and Gonzales (9K, 1BB) were lights out for the Navy and Gold. The pair made quick work of the Saints' offense creating opportunities for 16 flyouts and 13 groundouts collectively, while Gonzales tallied a career-high nine strikeouts.

Leading the Warriors offensively was Davis (3-6, 1HR, 4 RBI), Beasley (3-4, 1HR), and Arase, who ended the day at 3-7 with a homer and an RBI.

The Navy and Gold will be back in action tomorrow morning in Helena. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. (MT).
