Corban Baseball Splits Day-One Doubleheader with EOU

KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team split its day-one doubleheader with Eastern Oregon University on Friday, walking off in a 3-2 victory in game one before falling by an 11-3 tally in the back half of the twin bill.

Pitching was the story early on in game one, as Corban's Mason Shaw and EOU's Jaydon Yancey breezed through four scoreless frames in the series opener.

The visitors drew first blood in the top of the fifth, when Donovan Gonzalez blasted the first pitch of the inning over the left-center fence to put EOU up 1-0.

After a frustrating first five innings offensively, Kyle Clay helped the Navy and Gold pull even in the bottom of the sixth, slicing his third hit of the day down the right-field line to bring in the squad's first run. That broke a 25-inning scoreless streak for the Navy and Gold, bringing home his brother Ryan Clay, who led off the inning with a double.

After the Warrior bullpen was able to navigate Mountaineer threats in the seventh and eighth, the visitors got the clutch hit they were seeking in the top of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Jamie Powell delivered the knock, putting EOU in front 2-1 with a two-out RBI single to left field.

Needing to conjure some late inning magic, the Warriors plated two in the bottom of the ninth to earn their second walk-off win in the squad's past three home games. Estenio Sede started the rally with a leadoff double into the left-field corner, and then a pinch-hit bunt single—and subsequent throwing error from the Mountie defense—from Aidan Bunn helped Sede come around to score.

A pair of walks then loaded the bases for the Navy and Gold, and a gritty eight-pitch at-bat from Brad Pellkofer ended with the Corban center fielder drawing a bases-loaded walk to seal the victory.

In game two, a balk forced home a first-inning run for the Mountaineers, helping the visitors once again strike first. Corban got that run back in the bottom of the third, when Sede drove in Nainoa Ka'ahanui with an RBI groundout to the second baseman.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, Eastern Oregon answered right back with a run of their own in the next half inning, as McKlane Elgin poked an RBI single up the middle to put the squad from La Grande back in front.

Corban walked the first four batters of the top of the sixth, gifting EOU a run and helping ignite a four-run frame for the Mountaineers.

An RBI sac fly from Scott Artzer got one of those runs back for the Warriors in the bottom of the stanza, but sloppy pitching and defense fueled five more runs for the visitors between the seventh and eighth innings.

A bright spot in the ninth came from Artzer, who blasted his first career homer over the left field fence to account for Corban's third run of the ballgame. The long ball was an encouraging moment in an otherwise disappointing game two for the Navy and Gold.

Cale Thompson (3-for-3) and Ryan Clay (2-for-3) had solid performances at the plate in the defeat.

Corban (10-9-1) and Eastern Oregon will return to the diamond at Volcanoes Stadium for another doubleheader tomorrow, with first pitch slated for 11 a.m. in Keizer.
