Homeruns Help Navy and Gold Softball Blast Past Knights in Doubleheader Sweep

PORTLAND, Ore. - Homeruns from three senior members of the Corban University softball team propelled Corban to a 9-7 victory in game one. In game two it was the second-year players that stole the show with a homerun from Meri McElligot and runs scoring off of the bats of Sarah Parker and Cambria Kerze.

Warner Pacific ace, Sammie Braukmiller, made quick work of the Warriors in the top of the first, but the visiting team was prepared to answer back. Anastasia Iosia blasted a two-run bomb in the second to put Corban on the board and then Taylor Beasley scored Logann Walker and Paia'ala Wilcox-Molina with a three-run shot.

The hometown squad did not give up, and despite the seven-run deficit going into the fourth were able to push five runs across thanks to Warrior miscues and free passes.

Madison Wyllie homered to left in the top of the sixth to take the score to 8-5 in favor of Corban.

Alise Olson started in the circle for the Navy and Gold and pitched 3.1 innings before Holly Gonzales came in to earn herself a save.

Errors plagued the Warriors, but they were able to pull off a game one win.

McElligot added to the homerun tally in game two scoring both Kaycee Arase and Beasley who reached via Knight miscues.

Warner Pacific was able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second frame, ensuring that the Warriors never had a comfortable lead.

After coming in in relief in game one, Gonzales was impressive on the mound in the second contest. Going all the way, the ace scattered nine hits and allowed only three earned runs. The Warriors took game two, 7-5.

Arase (2-4, 2 R) and Wilcox-Molina (2-3, BB, RBI) tabbed multi-hit performances in game two, while Kerze and Parker joined McElligot and Wilcox-Molina in the RBI category.

Corban will return to action tomorrow morning in Portland. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
