Strong Second Half Lifts Loggers over Corban Women’s Lacrosse, 10-5

SALEM, Ore. – Staring down just a one-goal deficit at halftime against NCAA Division III University of Puget Sound, the Corban University women's lacrosse team was unable to garner offensive momentum in the second half of its Saturday afternoon game on Corban's campus.

The Loggers out-scored the Navy and Gold 5-1 in the second half to pull away for a 10-5 triumph.

"We came out strong in the first three quarters against a tough Puget Sound team," said head coach Kylie McMinn. "They're top-three in their conference, and we held our own with them. I think our injuries and lack of defensive subs got to us in the last quarter, but we still finished with the smallest score differential out of any of their wins so far this season. I'm very proud of how we played today; the ladies earned their spring-break rest, and we're looking forward to coming back refreshed and ready to keep the bar high."

The Warriors showed their resilience in the first half, battling back after Puget Sound scored the first four goals of the game to take an early lead.

Goals from Megan Lia (assisted by Geneen Impreso) and Sydney Davis helped the Navy and Gold cut that deficit in half by the end of the first quarter, and then Davis assisted another goal from Lia and a score from Sarah Whitbey in the second half.

At the midway mark, the Loggers possessed just a 5-4 advantage, and Davis struck again to even the score at five just over 30 seconds into the second half.

Unfortunately, that would be the last time Corban would be able to break through offensively, as the Loggers scored five unanswered goals to finish out the contest.

Hat tricks from Abby Stranahan and Emily Lariviere (who also had two assists) paced the visitors, while Hayden Hotchkiss also collected a brace.

For the Warriors, it's the third brace of the year for Lia, and the fourth time Davis has scored at least a pair of goals. In net, Payton Nuse earned 10 saves in the defeat.

Corban (2-2) will be back at home in two weeks, hosting in-state rival Eastern Oregon University on April 2 on campus. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
